Federalists

Strengthening National Power Day By Day

Who are the federalists?

The federalists are a political party who are led by Washington and Hamilton. Most of the Low Country people are in favor of us, but the Democratic-Republicans are mostly in the back country. We are supported mostly by the people who want stronger national power rather than state power.

Assuming the States Debt

We feel that the Federal Government should have to pay debt from the Revolutionary War. Also, the Federal Government should assume the states debt.

Creation of a National Bank

We wanted to create a national bank so that we could provide a safe storage area for government funds, also it would serve as an agent for the government in the collection, movement, and expenditure of tax money.

French Revolution

We detested the French Revolution of 1789 because it led to mob rule and confiscation of property.

Power of the National Government

We feel that the National Government wasn't getting enough say in representation. The state government was getting more representation and we were getting sick of it. We decided to go to court with them.

Alien and Sedition Acts

The Alien and Sedition Acts had 4 parts:

  • Naturalization Act- this extended the amount of time immigrants had to live in the United States to become citizens for 5 to 14 years.
  • Alien Enemies Act- provided that once war had been declared, all male citizens of an enemy nation could be arrested, detained, or deported.
  • Alien Friends Act- authorized the president to deport any non-citizen suspected of plotting against the government during either wartime or peacetime.
  • Sedition Act- its provisions seemed to be directly aimed at those who spoke out against the federalists.

War with Britain in 1812

The reason we went to war with Britain was because they had violated U.S. Sovereignty. We did not support the war because it was not making the national power nor the state power any stronger.
