About this Presentation
Day 1: Math Words in Motion: Building Math Vocabulary
Background knowledge, specifically math vocabulary, is a key indicator in how well students will learn new material. The more math vocabulary students have in their head, the more meaningful connections they will be able to make in the lesson and the more clearly they will be able to explain their thinking. However, math is not and should not be considered a class in vocabulary.
This workshop will offer 12 practical, easy to use, engaging strategies for teaching math vocabulary that do not take time away from teaching the math. These research driven, brain-based strategies will help students build background knowledge, solidify understanding, and strengthen problem solving skills.
Teachers will receive a list of 257 critical math vocabulary by grade level, a DVD that shows how to put words in motion, and access to free materials that can be used right away in classrooms. During the workshop, teachers will have the opportunity to practice the strategies, in-depth, as well as to create materials that will match the needs of their students. For the math teacher, this workshop will be useful, fast-paced, engaging, and will spark new ideas energy into your teaching.
Recommended for Grades 2-8.
As a result of attending, teachers will:
- be able to use 3-6 strategies to improve the teaching of math vocabulary and 3-6 strategies to improve engagement;
- know the 40-60 critical math vocabulary words for their grade level;
- receive and create new materials to support the implementation of the strategies.
