Counselor Corner
Dear Parents,
Happy Lunar New Year! Happy Black History Month! Happy Random Acts of Kindness Month!
This month's Social Emotional Learning topic is acceptance and diversity. We are discussing what it means, why it’s important, and how we can be mindful to always include others! Below are some opportunities that you can help your child continue to learn about acceptance and diversity at home. We look forward to exploring this at school, and we hope your family will enjoy it just as much!
Sincerely,
Your Counselors
Angel Cunningham (K-2) & LaKendra Todd-Collins (3-5)
READ ABOUT IT!
Here are some books to help learn more about acceptance:
A Rainbow of Friends By P.K. Hallinan
Whoever You Are By Mem Fox
Strictly No Elephants By Lisa Mantchev
The Name Jar By Yangsook Choi
PRACTICE IT!
Talk with your child about a person or family that you know who is different than you. Make a plan with your child to reach out to this person/family and invite them to spend time with you. It can be an outing, a meal, or something else. Have your child make and deliver the invitation!
TALK ABOUT IT!
Here are some discussion points to help you talk about acceptance and diversity with your child:
What do you think acceptance means and why is it important?
What is one way you can show acceptance at school?
What is one way you can show acceptance outside of school?
Has anyone ever made you feel accepted? Tell me about it.
Have you ever felt left out or discriminated against? Tell me about it.
What would the world look like if everyone was the same?
