FAFSA Reminders
Seniors, if college or trade school is in your future, remember to submit the FAFSA. Some schools have priority filing dates coming up in February and March. If you don’t file by the priority deadlines, you may not get your financial aid information until after decision deadlines (meaning you may have to commit to a school without knowing how much money they will give you).
When filing the FAFSA, choose 2019-2020 if you are entering college in Fall 2019. Make sure you indicate which schools you’d like to send your FAFSA to; send it to any school you are interested in attending.

What Can Juniors Do to Prepare for College?
Keep your grades up!
Spring semester will be the last full semester to show up on your college applications next year (if you’re applying early).
Poor grades in dual enrollment courses can affect your financial aid eligibility. Stay at a C or above to avoid any future problems.
Study for AP exams (if taking)
Getting AP credit can reduce credit load (and cost) in college.
Volunteer and/or get involved in extracurricular activities
Colleges love to see applicants who are involved in their communities. Find volunteer opportunities, participate in clubs or sports, or begin working a part-time job.
Research colleges
Use resources such as collegeboard.org or schev.edu to research colleges
It is a good idea to have at least three types of colleges on your list:
Reach: A college you like but may not completely have the grades/test scores for;
Match/fit: A college that is just right for your abilities;
Safety: A college that you are almost certain you will be accepted to
Visit campuses when possible. If it’s not financially feasible, try using online virtual tours.
Take the SAT and/or ACT
Taking the SAT or ACT during spring of junior year is often the best plan. This will allow you plenty of extra time to retake the test if needed. In fact, a lot of students take the test twice.
Fee waivers are available to students who qualify. See a counselor or Ms. Taylor.
Register before the deadline! Registration info can be found at https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/register/dates-deadlines. Registering past the deadline will result in an extra charge. Students who register with a fee waiver will not have an extra fee if registering past the regular deadline.
Sign up on khanacademy.org to practice for the SAT. The site contains free video tutorials covering all the types of problems you may see on the test. Start practicing early!
Save money
Applying to college can be expensive. Application fees, college visits, and testing costs can really add up. Save now so that it isn’t as much of a burden later. Note: Students with free/reduced lunch will qualify for SAT/ACT fee waivers and application fee waivers.
- Make an appointment with Mrs. Hummer (Career Coach) or Ms. Taylor (College Adviser). Mrs. Hummer can help with career exploration and community college needs, while Ms. Taylor can assist with applications, financial aid, SAT/ACT registration, etc.
Attend College Night in March (see info below)
Why Take the SAT During Junior Year???
Students often get their best test results during spring of Junior year. The math section is primarily algebra-based with a few advanced math concepts. Junior year is often the time when these skills are still fresh. Students can refresh these skills on Khan Academy.
Taking the test during Junior year gives ample time for retakes. Those who wait until the first semester of their Senior year often run out of time to improve their scores before applications are due. Don’t fall into this trap!
SAT Prep
To help you prepare for the SAT, Ms. Taylor (college adviser) will be holding six (free) prep sessions. Mr. Hartinger will teach the math sessions. See the dates below:
Thursday, Jan. 17: Essay practice (the essay section is optional on the SAT)
Tuesday, Jan. 22: Reading Part 1
Thursday, Jan. 24: Reading Part 2
Tuesday, February 5: Writing/language
Thursday, February 7: Math Part 1
Wednesday, February 13: Math Part 2
Each session will have in-depth review of the topic and some practice time. You can also study for free on khanacademy.org. Practicing can make a big difference in your score!
Upcoming Events
SAT Prep: Ms. Taylor will host a 6-session SAT prep course beginning in January. These sessions will be free to all students. Students do not have to attend every session, but it is recommended. The sessions will involve a breakdown of material covered as well as plenty of practice time. See details above.
College Night: Juniors and their parents are encouraged to join us for College Night on March 12th (5:30 PM- 7:30 PM) . The night will begin with a presentation detailing the steps of the college process. We will be joined by several guest speakers from colleges around Virginia. Pizza will be provided.
College and Career Day: Mrs. Huntsinger has been busy planning our College and Career Day! All CHS students will have the opportunity to speak with several college representatives, employers, and more.
