Weekly Message
This week we want to celebrate so many positives. Our middle school teachers and support people sponsored a very successful Back to School Night. It was very well attended and I know the parents who were there appreciated learning from the teachers and being able to check in about what and how their children would be learning this year. The carnival was last night and what an event! It was so much bigger than I expected. We got a chance to connect with so many families in that fun environment. And we got to celebrate the opening of our new track. It looks amazing! If you haven't had a chance yet, check it out.
In the month of October, Lindsay and I will begin our observations. We'll be giving feedback after every observation during your next plan time. It will be a 10-minute conversation about what we noticed. I'm still scheduled to learn from Kathleen about the feedback cycle so it may look a little different than that after I begin my work with her. If it does, I will let you know. In the meantime, we can't wait to talk with you about your practice and how to grow together as a teaching/learning community. Our initial observations will focus on mini-lessons.
Both Lindsay and I are excited about the promise of this year. I hope you have some time to relax and rejuvenate this weekend.
Warm regards,
Jennifer and Lindsay

New Handbook Language About Professional Day
Scheduled beginning and ending times in each building shall be determined by the District. At Raleigh Hills, certified employees are offered the opportunity to flex their schedule. Staff will have a choice to either work 7:45am-3:45pm or 8:00am-4:00pm. However, for those of you who chose 7:45am-3:45pm, , please note that you will be expected to stay until 4:00pm each Tuesday for our mandatory meetings. (Feel free to shift Tuesdays to 8-4pm while the rest of your week is 7:45am-3:45pm) Employees may make reasonable adjustments to their daily and weekly schedule as necessary to accommodate professional obligations (including Association business) and to meet personal needs. (This should happen rarely within the month and not on a continuous basis. However, there are situations that may require one to leave early often for a short period of time. If this is the case, please let me know.)
As a professional courtesy and to ensure the safety and security of students and staff, employees will notify the office when adjusting their schedule. Each building will establish a process for notification. At Raleigh Hills, if you leave early, please use the sign-out sheet located in the office. We will use this same form to sign-out and back in if you have to leave during the day but are coming back. (Example: run to the store)
Picture Day
Narrative Writing Samples OCTOBER 8th
MIddle School Math and Science Teachers
In an effort to make sure you get something that is tailored to you on October 11th, I've arranged for you to be able to attend training with Whitford teachers for part of the day. They will be calibrating. Here are the directions they've given their teachers. You will go to Meadow Park to participate if you'd like. If you choose to stay here, please collect the same evidence. We'll use it on October 8th and 11th.
Save the Date-Let’s Calibrate! All Middle School teachers will participate in a calibration on October 11 from 10:10-11:40am.
Preparation for the Calibration Process:
September - Teachers should collect the evidence of three students’ work related to one Academic or long-term learning target.
a. Teachers should use their best judgment in September to select three students who may perform at varying levels throughout the school year on a long-term learning target of their choosing.
b. The individual student tasks within the collection of evidence may cover more than one long-term learning target, but the collection of evidence should be focused around one long-term learning target.
c. Teachers should make copies of the tasks completed by the three selected students around the selected long-term learning target prior to returning the originals to the students.
d. Teachers should print and attach the rubric used to assess each task.
Staff Shout Outs
That's why we'll be starting a part of the newsletter each week called Staff Shout Outs. If you have a story of thanks, gratitude or recognition that you'd like to share with the staff, send me an email. I will publish those in the newsletter each week. I know there is a lot of kindness and collaboration going on around the building. Those stories really fill my bucket and we need to celebrate acts of kindness!

PE Minutes
SB 4 P.E. and Elementary Classroom Activity Minutes Data
This year SB 4 goes into effect, a state law mandating 120 minutes of PE a week for students in grades K-5. To meet this requirement, elementary students will receive instruction from their PE teacher and engage in physical activity under the direction of a teacher with a license and endorsement to provide PE instruction (i.e., elementary multiple subjects). The number of minutes of physical activity must be reported to ODE in the spring by school and grade level.
Because of this classroom teachers of students in grades K-5 will report the number of minutes of physical activity their students are engaged in, one week in the fall (November 18 – 22) and one week in the spring.
Please do the following prior to the fall data collection window:
1) Review this 15 minute video which reviews the benefits of physical activity for students (the why), the requirements of SB 4, and the procedure for data collection (also outlined below). Note that the fall data collection window has been delayed to November so you have more time to prepare.
2) After you have viewed the video, please fill out this form to let me know that you have seen it.
In order for us to meet the required number of PE minutes, students should engage in 10 minutes of brain boost or other movement activity in the classroom per day. That can include a yoga or mindful movement activity.

Sub Shortage Plan
We may be dealing with sub shortages this year. Lindsay has created our school's sub shortage plan. This document will explain how the MOU regarding subs will play out at Raleigh Hills. You can help us with sub shortages by prearranging your subs as much as possible. Also, please put in your sub requests for illness as soon as you know. If you're not feeling well the night before, go ahead and put it in. The sooner we know, the more likely we will get a sub.
