Comparing poetry
"Tornado at Talladega" and "Sleeping in the Forest"
Introduction
Poems really do make you think. Its crazy trying to figure out poem about something that is surrounding you. It makes you think is this happening in my city? Two poems I have read make me ask questions like that are "Tornado at Talladega" and "Sleeping in the Forest". Both of these poems show examples of form and structure, tone, and figurative language.
Some examples of form and structure, tone, and figurative language.
Structure
The structure of "Tornado at Talladega" is a free verse poem, it has 4 stanzas,16 lines total, and line breaks. The structure of the poem "Sleeping in the Forest" is a free verse poem, it only has one stanza, to me it looks like the text shape of a coffin, and there is 18 lines total. The structure of the two poems are fairly similar.
Tone
The tone of the poem "Tornado at Talladega" has a lot of anger to it. In the lines 5-8 it says "certain trees// stick across the road.// They are unimportant now." Also, in lines 9-10 it says "Not a one of these, the bewildered,// can announce anymore "How fine I am!" She is obviously angry about something. I think it could be the storm it could also be something deeper than that. In the poem "Sleeping in the Forest" I think the narrator is talking about life and death. The narrator says things like "Into something better." which could mean haven. Also, it says "I slept// as never before." which could be her laying there dead which could be better than living.
Figurative language
In the Poem "Tornado at Tallladega" it has personification in it. It says that the trees can't sass any more "Certain trees// stick across the road.// They are Unimportant now.// They cannot sass anymore." That is personification because trees cant sass anyone. Also, it has some repetition in it. In lines 7-8 it says "They are unimportant now.// They cannot sass anymore." The word they is used twice in the beginning of each sentence. In the poem "Sleeping in the Forest" it uses personification when it says "The earth// remembered me" which is personification because the earth can't remember anything.
Conclusion
The two poems "Tornado at Talladega" and "Sleeping in the Forest" have many examples of form, tone, and figurative language. These poems are also very similar in there form, tone, and figurative language. The poems really do make you think about whats around you.
