BULLDOG BULLETIN

New Britton Elementary

August 2021

I AM. YOU ARE. WE ARE. BULLDOGS!

News from Mrs. Mankin

Dear Bulldog Families,

We hope that this week has been a relatively smooth transition for your student(s) and family! There have been several changes this year for us to adapt to: early start times, a full-day/full-week in-person schedule, and some updated procedures. We are so appreciative of your patience and partnership as we all adjust to our new school year.

Be sure to ask your child about community-building, learning routines, and class agreements/expectations based upon our Building-wide FISH expectations. Students have been engaged in discussion about what the following expectations look like in their classrooms:

  • Be There
  • Make Their Day
  • Choose Your Attitude
  • Play Safely and Fairly (Safety)

Parents/guardians of students in 1st-4th grades will have the opportunity to meet their student's teacher, learn more about classroom expectations, and hear about learning highlights on Monday, August 9th. There will be two sessions for your convenience, but you only need to attend one for each child:

  • Session #1, 5:45p.m.-6:15
  • Session #2, 6:30p.m.-7:00

It has been a busy 3 days, and it always takes some extra time to get back into the routine of school. Students and teachers alike will sleep well tonight and will need some extra rest and relaxation this weekend. We feel so fortunate to be working with each and every New Britton student. Thank you for sharing your child(ren) with us! As always, thank you for partnering with us in education.

Sincerely,

Lori Mankin, Principal

Directory Information

Our HSE Elementary Student Handbook is filled with important information and resources for families. Please click on the link above (Elementary Student Handbook) to access the handbook. It contains answers to frequently asked questions like:

  • How do I report an absence for my child?
  • What factors are considered in determining whether students will go out for recess (temperature, heat index, etc.)?
  • What is the process for a background check so I can volunteer in the classroom?

Please bookmark this site so that you can use our handbook as a resource this year. Pay special attention to the Directory Information section, found by selection Corporation Policies. If you do not want your information shared in the school directory (accessed through Skyward Family Access), please notify us by sending an email to srutledge@hse.k12.in.us. Similarly, if you do not wish for your child's picture to be shared in publications (class/school newsletters, Twitter, etc.), please let us know by Thursday, August 18. When we share pictures, we do not include names or other identifiable information.

Upcoming Events

PTO Information

The NBE Parents and Teachers Organization (PTO) invites all parents and teachers to join us for a fresh start this school year! We are seeking volunteers and input this year, and would love to boost participation to give our students great opportunities and support the NBE teachers and staff! Below are some great ways to help:

1) Please vote on our slate of officers for this school year by clicking on this link (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/63K7NRV). It's a single question, and takes less than one minute to complete. IMPORTANT: Please vote ONLY once and ONLY cast a vote if you are a teacher or have a current student in attendance at New Britton.

2) Join us at PTO meetings this year. The next two meetings are on August 24 and September 21 at 7 p.m We would love to see new and returning faces. This is a great way to learn about school happenings, connect with other parents, and be involved. The more the merrier! Meetings will be held just inside the main doors of the school.

3) Let us know you want to volunteer. Click this link(https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/655XM63), provide your name and contact information, and select how you would like to help."

Thank you!

School Pictures - Save the Date in Your Calendar

Our school pictures will be taken on Tuesday, September 21st. Ordering information will be sent home at a later date.

Speech and Hearing Screenings

Welcome back NBE families! Many students will be participating in speech and hearing screenings during the first two weeks of school.

Speech screenings will be completed for Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students and you will be contacted via phone and letter if your child would benefit from speech therapy services in the school setting. If you are not contacted, you can assume your child passed his/her speech screenings for their developmental age level (see chart below for district wide norms).

Big picture

Hearing screenings will be completed for Kindergarten, 1st, 4th, and any new students who move to the HSE school district. If students fail the screening, they will be re-screened in 2-3 weeks and a referral will be sent home at that time if hearing continues to be a concern.

Feel free to contact me via email (aquinn@hse.k12.in.us) if you have any questions about your child’s speech or hearing abilities. Thanks for your support and let’s have a great year!

  • If your new kindergartener, or other student needs state required immunizations and you are unsure of how to fulfill the requirements, please contact Mrs. Cernero hcernero@hse.k12.in.us for assistance. Commitment to Health & Safety - COVID Reporting

An online reporting form has been added to the HSE Schools website [ COVID-19 Self-Reporting Form - Hamilton Southeastern Schools (hseschools.org) - also below ]. This tool was created as an additional reporting option to allow parents to alert a school(s) about their student’s COVID-related situation over breaks and during non-school hours. Please partner with us by sharing any Covid-related symptoms, quarantines, or positive results that occur over break. Thank you for your help with this important process.
