Dater Montessori _March 2021 Edition
One Quarter to Go!
Hello Dater Families,
We have one more week to go until the end of 3rd quarter. Please have your child finish strong with completing all assignments/projects. The next CPS Board Meeting is Wednesday, March 10. As soon as I receive the link I will send it out. I encourage everyone to watch it as a decision that night could possibly change how the 4th quarter model looks. As always, I will continue to keep our families informed and ready.

GO GATORS!!
Safety Tips with nurse Kisha
Our aim is to stop the spread! COVID testing is available here at the school Monday-Friday 8am-4pm. The sample collected will be sent to Children's Hospital lab and the turnaround has been pretty fast, usually coming back the next day. COVID consents are available here at the school. Your child will only be tested with your approval and notification.

E is for Empathy. What does it look like and why is it so important to teach our kids?
Empathy is defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. For a young child, it requires them to recognize different emotions and be able to understand the differences between the emotions. It also requires a child to know what that emotion feels like themselves and then understand when someone else is feeling that same way. What a complex skill!
Empathy is not only a way of thinking, but a behavior. In order for kids to be seen as empathetic by others, they need to learn to show that they understand and share another’s feelings.
Why is it so important to teach our kids this skill? Kids who are more empathetic tend to be more confident and less aggressive (translation: not likely to be bullies!). Empathetic kids are also more popular and generally appear happier.

A Note from our Mental Health Partner : Beechacres
Is one of your top strengths Self- Control or Self- Regulation?
I manage my feelings and actions and am disciplined and self-controlled
Self-control is the ability to have control of your emotions. Those with this top strength can control their reactions to situations, conversations, disappointments, etc- and able to use the strength to help keep a sense of balance, order, and progress in life.
A student or parent that can easily tap into this strength tend to have a healthier relationship with boundaries, other people, work life, and setting goals. The good thing about Self-control is that everyone has it in them, but some may need to put in a little more effort to use it!
Self-Control, how to improve yours
Lucky for you, there are tangible things you can do in your everyday life to improve this strength for you.
Mindfulness: By setting intentions and staying present, most people can encourage themselves to be able to mentally prepare for their day, weeks, or even month. By planning how you are going to spend your time, you set reasonable expectations for yourself and your family. To start this- simply plan the next 30 minutes of your life- what does it looks like, what do you want to get done, how will you get it done, and how will you measure success?
Make Decisions and implement intentions: Most of us who struggle with this strength, do so because it feels like a battle you already lost (I will only eat a spoonful of ice cream and then you look down and notice you ate the entire pint) and you are allowing yourself to believe you have no control when in reality you have all of the control. By removing the internal fight, you have a plan you can not execute. It sounds silly, but it works!
Bring Games into the home: Games like Green Light, Red Light, Simon Says and Freeze dancing helps train your mind and your child’s mind how to practice your self control. To be successful you need to be present (listening for instruction), intentional (removal of all inner decision making), and maintain control of your body. Nobody is too old to participate with these games and the best part is you can integrate them into almost any part of your life including shopping, chores, homework, classroom activities, driving, etc.
By leaning into your strength of Self-Control, our hope is that you and your child can be more successful in the home and school and to open the door for a playful exploration of our own individual strengths!

Tech Talk with Julie Faller
Students have often told me they have to lie about their age to set up a personal email account because of the age limit policies. But, there is an honest way for students to have their own email accounts even if they have not yet reached the required age to own one. Nearly every email provider has an option for a Family Account where parents give permission for their children to create an email account. Some providers, like Yahoo, are moving away from allowing children under 13 to have accounts. If you allow your child to play games online, email accounts are required. Students must use personal email accounts, not their school account, for such online activities. Google has a great resource for families called Family Link. The goal of the Family Link app is to help your family create healthy digital habits by setting ground rules that enable children to safely learn, play, and explore online. Some features of the app are 1) Parents can set a time limit on screen time 2) Parents can lock the device when it’s time to play, study or sleep 3) Parents have access to activity reports that show what apps the child is using. Building healthy online habits is critical in this digital age and Family Link is free, so check it out!

Virtue of the Month :Judgement
Every one of us has, at some point in our lives, thought, “if you only knew the whole story you wouldn’t think/say/act like that.” We wished that someone could “walk a mile in our shoes.” The only way we can possibly move from a place of judgment about another’s experience is to take the time to hear the story. To listen and absorb the experiences and feelings that makeup someone else’s life. I believe that when we can base our actions on empathic responses to what we feel - as opposed to judgments that we make - our entire perspective will shift. We will be responsible - able to respond - to each other in the most humane of ways.
“Not judging people is the fastest way to peace.” ~ Anonymous
