ALL HANDS ON DECK

Our Collective Commitment Corner
Team,
My reflection this week comes back to our continued endeavors in bringing the learning targets to our students. What is evidenced throughout our school is an effort, though not universal yet, to provide both visual and verbal student-friendly targets.
We’re most certainly moving from a place of compliance in regard to clarity of objectives. The research supports this piece as best practice, and we see with our students that clarity of learning targets supports growth. Really, who doesn’t benefit from clarity, right?!
As we continue to refine our craft, I challenge us all to begin class (or shortly into it following an anticipatory set because these can naturally be flipped) by articulating our targets, circling back to them throughout the lesson, and then touching back at the close of class with some kind of formative assessment. Truly, then, this will be rigorous work from bell to bell.
One word of caution as we move forward is to differentiate between what our learning targets are and what our students’ “to do” list is for the day. The learning target is that unpacked standards in language our students can embrace. Our “to do” lists or agendas are how our students will work toward said objective. Within my own classroom, and as you can see below in a snip from last year, I tended to use both objectives and agendas. That way, students knew right from walking into the room exactly what to expect. Magically, it took away that dreaded question of “What are we doing today?” or worse yet, “Are we doing anything today?” Yikes!
As always, if you have any needs with planning or problem-resolving, just say the word.
Spirit Week!
Winter Break Flex Day Clarification and Clocking Instructions
The District is implementing two flex days for the Winter Break. Teachers, Counselors, School Psychologists & Process Coordinators have the choice of working one of two days: Monday, December 23, 2019 or Friday, January 3, 2020. The flex day option only applies to these staff members. All other work groups should follow their staff calendars linked here.
On your chosen flex day, when clocking in in Time & Attendance, select the "Winter Flex Day" under the Location & Job Type dropdown. Do not select your teacher position on this flex day. Please see attached instructions for flex day clocking.
Winter Break Shut Down List
Your classroom will be essentially vacant over the winter break. Please take a moment before you leave to walk through your classroom and turn off / unplug the following items in your classroom. Turning these items off will capture a surprisingly large amount of energy savings. Thank you for your participation and have a wonderful break!
Classrooms:
- Desktop Computers / PCs / Monitors – Off
- Space heaters – Unplugged
- Classroom Lights - Off
- All Smart Boards / DVD players / Projectors / TVs - Off
- All Lamps / Desk Fans / Radios / Etc. – Off
- Keurig / Coffee pots – Unplugged
- Scentsy Heated Candles - Unplugged
- All hot plates - Off
- Any other Electrical Devices – Unplugged
- Mini-Refrigerators cleaned out with door propped open and towel to absorb freezer thaw - Unplugged
Diversity Presentation to Student Body
Dr. Sayre met with each class on Wednesday morning to talk about diversity, harassment and what we can do better to be inclusive. Students were shown how to report harassment when they see it.
A big impact is made when we say or do things that we did not INTEND to hurt feelings. The judgment is made by students' actions, not intentions. This is where the hurt feelings or angry reactions can come from.
