Superintendent's Notes
Issue 26: January 30, 2020
My Thoughts...
In a school system, any given time of year is considered "busy." However, I have determined that in my position, this time of the year is very, very BUSY. Why? Well, in one word: BUDGET. As of today, the Board of Education has seen my proposed budget and will hold their public budget hearing on February 5 (details below in the Upcoming Events section). One of the most challenging parts of this process is putting together a proposed budget that is based on the needs of the school system while not knowing with any type of certainty what type of revenue that we will be receiving from our funding sources (mainly, the state and the county). We know what we need and while I agree that the term "bare-bones budget" has become almost cliche, I cannot think of a better way to describe what we put forward. In fact, many of our budget lines have remained flat. With that being said, I will keep you posted as to the latest budget news as this process progresses. If you would like to view the presentation from last week's Board of Education budget work session, you can view that HERE.
In much more enjoyable news, I have been attending middle and high school athletic events across the county. I would highly encourage you to visit one of these events. I continue to be encouraged by the talent of our athletes, but most importantly, by the sportsmanship displayed by our CCPS teams.
Speaking of TEAMS, tomorrow, January 31, we will celebrate our second annual CCPS Team Pride Day! Students and employees are encouraged to showcase their favorite team, sport, club, etc. by wearing a shirt or jersey. This was incredibly popular last year and I can't wait to see the team pride across the system! You just may see me in my Eagles jersey!! If you haven't seen it on social media yet, be sure to check out the video we posted today!
Sincerely,
Dr. Jeffrey A. Lawson

High School: Bohemia Manor High School, Class of 2005
Job Title: Program Financial Analyst
Higher Education: Wilmington University, Bachelor of Science in Business Management
Tell Us About Your Work: I work at Northrop Grumman in Elkton, Maryland as a Program Financial Analyst. In my role I work with a team made up of Program Managers, Engineers, Planners, and Schedulers to create a financial plan that meets the requirements given to us by our customer. Once the plan is set I monitor the performance (cost and schedule) and adjust the monthly forecast based on trends and inputs from the team. This process is important because it allows us to see if we are ahead or behind schedule as well as under/over budget and easily communicate our status to the customer.
How did your experiences in CCPS prepare you for college and the workforce? I enjoyed my time at Bo Manor and, in my experience, the teachers were always there to help and continuously challenged me. In high school, I played both soccer and baseball; while academics are VERY important, it's also important to learn how to be part of a team and work with others and I feel my time spent on those teams greatly benefited me.
