Birmingham Church Bombing

On September 16, 1963 a bomb exploded in the 16th Street baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. The church was a black congregation, and was often a meeting place for civil rights leaders. The explosion killed four young black girls, and injured at least 20 others. According to the pastor the church had been receiving threats since May and it had only been a matter of time before it would happen.
