From the Principal...
When I take some time to step away and reflect on the 2017-18 school year, I think about the 4th day of school experiencing the solar eclipse with our our kiddos. I think about the same week, the 8th day of school, we were called to stay home on August 25th due to Hurricane Harvey until school resumed September 5th. I think about how our community jumped into volunteer-mode to help anyone and everyone. I think about Friday December 8th, and how our campus was covered in snow and seized an opportunity to enjoy it! Then on January 16, we closed yet again, for icy conditions. When I think about this crazy year, I can't help but think how lucky we are to have YOUR children and YOU as parents!
I think about the parent volunteers and how we can't thank you enough for our beautiful entrances, our beautiful landscaping, our beautiful program-sets, our amazing bookfairs, our fun-filled field day, our spirited Carnival, our gardening club, our Friday readers, and the list goes on and on! I think about our incredible fundraising goal to raise enough money to replace not 1, but 2 playgrounds and the support that poured out from everyone as we had a successful Boosterthon, Monthly Spirit Events, an awesome Buckalew Bash, Play-dates, VIP Experiences and Brick Sales. WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE PLAYGROUND FUNDRAISING GOALS HAVE BEEN MET AND OUR 2nd PLAYGROUND WILL BE INSTALLED OVER THE SUMMER!
I think about how blessed we are to have amazing families and that we get to spend over 7 hours a day during the school year with your children. I hope each and every one of you get to spend some quality family time together and have some sweet memories this summer!
Please see information in this BUZZ pertinent to a successful start for the 18-19 school year. Please refer any new families to our webpage and to register online as soon as possible.

Leave A Legacy Commemorating Buckalew's 20th Anniversary!
Leave a legacy commemorating Buckalew's 20th anniversary! Adopt a customized brick in Buckalew's schoolyard, and show your Buckalew Bear spirit! Your legacy brick will bring smiles to children for many years by funding new playground equipment and essential enrichment programs. The permanent installment will be outside the biker/walker door, replacing gravel with a safer and cleaner school path. Visit your brick anytime for years to come! Whether you have a current Buckalew Bear or a Buckalew graduate, this would make a perfect gift. You will always be a part of our Buckalew family!

Buckalew Bears have been hard at work painting rocks this year to decorate the front of our campus! It has been a great collaborative effort between the Garden Club mothers, the Art Department, and every student on campus!!
Check out the school of rock fish to the front garden! Each rock fish is unique, just like us and many have words of wisdom to share with future generations on the bottom. I am so excited to see the efforts of your hard work pay off in our first school wide art collaboration!! Thank you Mrs. Tatolli and family, and Mrs. Hargett and family for all of your hard work to make this collaboration happen.

Student – Lola Miller
Lola is a student who captures our motto of Buckalew: “today I choose to be kind, work hard, and do my best!” She is a student with many friends, a very high academic achiever, and is very successful in everything she sets her mind to.
Paraprofessional – Susan Davis
Mrs. Davis is a certified teacher who chooses to work in a paraprofessional position because she loves the “Response to Intervention” position. She works with Buckalew’s students who struggle most and fills gaps so students, parents, and teachers see the huge success! Susan has a positive attitude and advocates for all learners and collaborates with every teacher in the best interest of each and every student!
Educator – Robin Snyder
Mrs. Snyder is a 1st grade teacher who will admit she doesn’t like stepping out of her comfort zone. She is the first one to say this about herself yet is able to reflect, process, and make changes in the best interest of ALL students and our campus. She has been a leader on our Foundations team and a sounding board for those around her. She is always willing to step up to the plate, go above and beyond, and assist where needed.
Buckalew Recognized an Honor Roll School By the Educational Results Partnership (ERP) for 2017-18
After an extensive analysis of student data for every public school in Texas, BUCKALEW was a clear leader in getting students to grade level and beyond and has been named an Honor Roll school for the 2017-2018 Texas Honor Roll. Buckalew will receive recognition in the press as a leader in student achievement, will be provided with a banner to display on campus, and will be featured on our website where educators and policy makers seek out high performing schools so that they can replicate success.
The 2017-2018 Honor Roll recognizes public elementary, middle, and high schools that demonstrate high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement over time, and reduction in achievement gaps. For high schools, Honor Roll recognition includes measures of college readiness in students. This year, the Texas Honor Roll recognized 729 higher performing schools that are distinguished for their academic achievement and closing achievement gaps.
Through national research, we have identified a common set of success factors in higher performing Honor Roll schools and districts. These include clear, specific learning objectives aligned to college and career readiness, along with evidence-based instructional practices; establishing system-wide mission of college and career readiness for all students; investing in human capital; maintaining data and assessment systems to monitor school and student performance; and deploying resources and guidance to support schools' efforts to prepare all students for college and career.
