Clubs at Plaza
QUESTION?: How are clubs different than intramurals?
ANSWER!: Clubs run all year long! Intramurals will only run for 5 weeks of each quarter and will often change quarter-to-quarter. Have a look at some of the clubs currently available at Plaza below!
Dungeons & Dragons: If you can imagine it, it can happen! Dungeons & Dragons, commonly called D&D, is a table-top roleplaying game that encourages a wide variety of skills including creative writing, storytelling, peer mediation, math, creative problem solving, and more! D&D is a great way to connect with peers and have a blast while doing it. If you're interested in joining the table, reach out to Mrs. Fee (Room 514) for more information!
NJHS: The National Junior Honor Society is a great way for students who are excelling in their academics to get involved in some fun community service projects and provide services at school events (like running the concession stand)! NJHS is an 8th grade only club that students are invited to apply for at the end of their 7th grade year if they meet certain requirements. If you would like information on how your student can become eligible, please contact Mrs. Swanstone.
Student Council: Got spirit? Like to be involved? Want to make a difference? Then consider joining the Student Council! StuCo is responsible for planning things like our spirit days and making sure our Tigers get HYPED to be a part of #TigerNation. Selections are made at the end of the school year for the next academic year.
Yearbook Crew: Normally, the yearbook crew is made up of our Publications students, but if you got some skills you think might help (like photography, graphic design, or being an interviewer), then reach out to Ms. Landers and see if the Yearbook Crew needs any extra help!
Robotics Coming Soon! See flyer below. *NOTE* Based on feedback, meetings will be on MONDAYS, and NOT Tuesdays as indicated on the flyer.

Tiger Nation,
First week back from break and we made it! Getting back in the groove can be a challenge, but as always our Tigers are ready to rise to it. Be sure to check out the #LoudAndProud corner this week to see our students recognized for the Glory of Missouri Award by State Rep. Jamie Johnson!
Keep it up Tigers!
Dr. S
Tiger Nation,
This past week we completed our spring NWEA testing. We are excited to see the results as well as use them to better our instructional practices and finish the year strong when we take our MAP exams. We also hosted some guest from across the globe at Plaza. It is always a great opportunity to display our positive culture at Plaza to visitors (Please see the info below in the brag corner). Lastly, we have one week until spring break, let's make this the best one yet!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Dr. S
Tiger Nation,
This was a week full of a lot of emotions. We had one of most happiest and saddest moments in our city all on the same day. These times that we are living in are difficult. They are hard for us as the adults whom are tasked with navigating our youngsters through the briar and they are hard for our students that have been raised in it.
I spoke to students and staff on Thursday morning. I offered them a message of hope and love. I hope these words were comforting and reassuring of the processes we have in place here at Plaza and in the Park Hill School District to keep our kids safe. We also offered supports to any whom reached out and were seeking support. We know that we cannot do this life alone. We need each other to survive and to ultimately, thrive.
I wish you all a restful three day weekend.
Take care,
Dr. S
We completed another 5 day week at 6501! WE GOT THIS!
We had our 6th grade AVID enrollment night as well as Intramurals. If your student is thinking about participating in track, they will need to complete their SWAY testing before they can practice (more details below). We also had a number of celebrations this week from National Counselors Week (Shout out to Mrs. Malone, Mr. Coleman, and Mrs. Shroyer) to our Park Hill School District Teacher of the Year nominee: Mr. Chris Banks!!!! We are so proud.
I hope many of you can join us tonight for trivia night at Plaza. We will have some music, snacks, and most importantly fun. As always, we have a lot of great things happening at Plaza Middle School! Please take your time to read all the updates and activities that you or your scholar can engage in. We would love to see you!
Last but certainly not least, please take this weekend to enjoy the Super Bowl festivities. We are living in a golden age for the Kansas City Chiefs. Don't take it for granted.
Let's raise another Lombardi and have a RED SNOWDAY!!!
Dr. S
Tiger Nation,
We did it...A FULL WEEK! It was good getting back into the swing of things and a routine. Also it is Black History Month and our students will be participating in several lessons this month about the contributions of African Americans in history. In addition, our building is doing a school wide fundraiser to benefit the Banneker School Foundation. This "Change for Change" campaign is an opportunity for our students to compete with each other in a penny war to benefit a local historic landmark in downtown Parkville, Mo. If you want to learn more, I have attached the video below.
We also have our annual Super Bowl spirit week! (lol) We hope your students participate in the festivities as we gear up for the big game!
Have a wonderful weekend.
Dr. S
Tiger Nation,
We had school for 4 days this week! We are getting back into a groove of normalcy which is good for everyone. Consistency this month has been tough due to weather but I am glad that our kids have responded well to the challenge and will continue to grow. As this month comes to a close, please sit down with your scholars and go over their grades and assignments as midterm is quickly approaching.
This week also brought a close to our winter sports and we put an exclamation point on it with some great performances by our girls and boys basketball teams. Our girls C team brought home their tournament trophy as well as our girls A team brought home the City Championship! outstanding performances by all of our student athletes.
While this time of year appears as a lull, we do have intramurals and other activities that will be starting up soon. Please review the newsletter for opportunities to engage with us in the coming months!
Take care of yourself and others. Go Chiefs!!!!
Dr. S
Tiger Nation,
Well....we had school for 3 days this week, so that is a win!!! I appreciate everyone's patience as we continue to work through things that are outside of our control. However, we are glad to be back and focused on the task at hand. Also, I hope you had the opportunity to learn more about MLK on Monday with our activities that were previously posted. A heatwave of 30-40 degrees is coming soon...Brace yourself.
Go Chiefs,
Dr. S
Tiger Nation,
A very strange week indeed at 6501. We had 3 AMI days.....3! Now I know that this modality of learning cannot replace students in their seats physically , however, it is always best to take precaution when it comes to weather to ensure everyone is safe. I do feel blessed that we live in a time where we have access to learning outside of the school walls. It is my hope that students were able to connect with some enrichment in some shape or fashion.
We will back at it on Tuesday as Monday we have the no school due to observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Below you will find a few resources you can utilize on that day to do some additional learning about MLK Jr. and his lasting legacy. MLK Jr. Day is often referred to as a "day on, not a day off" so I encourage you to find a way to give back to the community in a positive way.
I hope you all stay safe and more importantly, stay warm this weekend. I am making a life choice and braving the Chiefs game on Saturday. I hope to unthaw by Tuesday when we return to Plaza (fingers crossed).
Take care,
Dr. S
It was a great short week here at 6501 and we are glad to see the happy faces of our returning Tigers. (Well....maybe not all students were excited to come back BUT I know as parents you were happy to have them back in school! )
The promise of a new year often brings the belief in one's hopes and dreams. However, I want to quote Denzel Washington when he said, "Dreams without goals, are just dreams and they ultimately fuel disappointment." All that to say, we are goal oriented at Plaza. We are working towards our collective goals each and everyday. All students should have individual goals both academic and personal. Take some time this weekend to chat with your student about their goals and what they are going to do in 2024 to be the best version of themselves and for their community. I hope you all have a restful weekend.
Take care,
Dr. S
Tiger Nation,
We are almost there! We have 3 school days left before winter break....not that anyone is counting :)
Our students are finishing their 2nd quarter strong with great performances in the classroom, the stage, and the hardwood. I am always very proud of our Tigers as they strive for greatness in all aspects of their lives.
I hope that this weekend brings you rest as well as success in your last minute panic shopping! Be kind to one another and stay safe out there.
Take care,
Dr. S
Plaza families,
We had a great week at Plaza and continue to work towards the end of 2nd quarter. Winter sports and activities are going well. Please encourage your scholars to remain focused and diligent until the last bell tolls.
Have a restful and blessed weekend Tiger Nation.
Dr. S
Tiger Nation,
We had a fantastic week at 6501! We completed our winter NWEA testing in reading, math, and science. Students that were absent will do their makeups throughout the next week or so. I am very proud of the outstanding effort our Tigers displayed. The belief in EFFORT, EFFORT, EFFORT! was very apparent as students worked hard to display their skills they have acquired this fall. I am excited to see the overall results and will be sharing them with the community when they come in.
Next, I would like to shout out our entire community. Plaza Middle School was recognized as a TOP MIDDLE SCHOOL IN MISSOURI!!! This feat is something everyone should take P.R.I.D.E in. We have collectively worked hard at making Plaza a safe and fun place for students to learn and grow. I am proud to be a part of this work.
Finally, we have a few more weeks until the end of the 1st semester. Let's finish strong!
Take care,
Dr. S
We had a great week at Plaza and it was capped off with our winter assembly! We will share more great photos and videos soon. I am proud of our kids and their energy. They are putting in the work to prepare themselves to be GREAT.
Next week is a two day week before fall break. I look forward to finishing strong as well as some relaxation. After break, we will have our winter administration of NWEA. This session will be important for future class placement at Plaza, PHHS, and LEAD. Please encourage your scholar to invest in themselves and do their best!
Have a wonderful weekend.
Dr. S
Another great week at 6501. I do have to be honest, as I am getting older, this daylight savings thing is having more of an impact on my sleep! However, our Tigers have responded well and have done great in the transition.
One thing I would like you to keep in mind as fall continues is our AMI procedures. For those who don't know AMI it is our Alternative Methods of Instruction. This would be used for inclimate weather days in lieu of adding them to the end of the school year. More information will be coming out soon for this but I wanted it to be on your radar as many of our teachers will begin speaking with students about AMI expectations.
With the Chiefs not playing this weekend I will have to find another activity to fill my free time....perhaps rake up my leaves for the 4th time! (so fun)
Take care of yourself and each other,
Dr. S
Message from the Principal
I hope you all had a restful weekend and ready to get back at! We have another full week at 6501. We have begun intramurals as well as fall sports. Hopefully you were able to also take advantage of another hour of sleep.
Please take a look at the remainder of the newsletter as it contains valuable information about the upcoming week. Things to take note of in particular is our MOCSA presentations that are coming up on the 20th and 21st of this month as well as our PTA Reflections competition.
Let's make this week great!
Take care,
Dr. S
Message from the Principal
We have started 2nd quarter here at Plaza Middle School. With that comes another opportunity for growth and greatness. I hope that you all had the opportunity to come into the school over the past several days for student led conferences. If you did not, please contact your students Life Ed teacher to get something on the calendar.
We also started MTSS sessions during our tutorial period for our Tigers that may need additional academic and behavior support as well as enrichments for students. As stated in our parent orientation/open house, the multi-tiered systems of support program (MTSS) is one that is ubiquitous across the district and letters for this should be arriving soon for your students placement. If you do not receive one, your student was placed in an enrichment for Q2. If you have additional questions, please reach out to us.
Lastly, intramurals and winter sports are right around the corner. We encourage all of our Tigers to stay involved and continue to bring positive, encouraging, and uplifting energy to our building each and everyday. I hope you all have a blessed weekend.
Take care of yourself and one another.
Dr. S
Message from the Principal
We have had a wonderful 1st quarter at Plaza Middle School. I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all of our Tigers on a job well done! This was a wonderful start to the school year. The energy and positivity on display during this quarter was welcome and appreciated in the our classrooms and other learning spaces at 6501.
Now that we have our footing, it is time to dive deeper into our academics, our relationships, and our culture. 2nd quarter is filled with winter sports, intramurals, winter NWEA testing, fall incentives, and many other opportunities for students to continue to grow. I am looking forward to the journey and know our Tigers are ready for the challenge!
Be Loud and Be Proud. GO TIGERS!!!
Dr. S

Friday was Friday'n today...BUT WE MADE IT!
We had another great week at Plaza. The next two weeks are short weeks due to a teacher work day next Friday and conferences the following week as well. Fall is here and that means a change of temperatures. Please ensure your student has a jacket or coat as the temperatures start to drop. Below you will see a new piece to our newsletter, the link tree. The link tree is a one stop spot for team related items. This will hopefully eliminate some clicks or extra tabs you have open to keep track of all the things we do at Plaza.
It wasn't pretty, but the Chiefs have already played and won so therefore you all can truly relax this weekend.
Take care,
Dr. S
Message from the Principal
We finally have some fall-like weather. Take some time to relax this weekend and cozy up in your bed with a good book and enjoy it! Parents, we sent NWEA results home with students on Friday. Please take a look at them as these are a component of what we use to provide support for our MTSS program that will begin at the start of quarter 2. Lastly, staff members should be reaching out to you for scheduling conferences that will take place at the end of the month.
Have a wonderful rest of your weekend!
Dr. S
