Rethink the pink - from Awareness to Prevention
What Cancer means to me and why I fight
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While you’ll find the symbol on everything from garbage cans to cosmetic products, the most important message—that of prevention—often is pushed aside.
Increasingly, science is pointing to environmental links to cancer. In 2010, the President’s Cancer Panel found that the true burden of non-genetic, environmentally induced cancer has been “grossly underestimated,” and a recent project by 300 international scientists concluded that even chemicals that are not carcinogenic on their own may be linked to cancer when used in combination with each other, even in very low doses.
I gave up on toxic daily deodorant and how that affected my daughter
My Story: I usually run hot (Todd calls me a natural furnace) and I sweat. FULL TRANSPARENCY: I used to be a clinical strength deodorant user. I was trying to find a non-toxic deodorant but I never found anything that worked. Instead I decided to go a month without using anything. NOTHING! Did you know that your your skin needs to go through a detox? So I needed to get the clinical strength stuff detoxed out before the new stuff could work! It was scary, but I did it and little by little I discovered that I didn't need to wear it everyday. Something that as a 7th grader I was told I needed to do. Now I only use my new non-toxic deodorant a few times a week such as when I have an event. I don't use it when I work out after all your suppose to sweat...its natural remember!! I didn't do the full detox that is listed in the link below, I just decided to stop using it and wore nothing, pretty simple. Best part my skin doesn't absorb any more carcinogens!
My 7th grade daughter Hazel's story: She noticed that the girls in the locker room after gym class (they have gym uniforms), were applying stinky deodorant and body spray. She came home and said "Mom, I am pretty sure the deodorant and spray the girls at school are using is toxic, they have fake colors, they smells fake. It makes me cough and its hard to breath." I told her how to have a a conversation with them about it (she is super shy). She uses Primal Pit Paste Deodorant - Lavendar and only after she works out a few times a week. (Is she mimicking me...yup and that makes me super proud;) She is sharing with her friends what she knows and this makes me tear up. This is why I don't use certain product and support the company's I do, they care about my daughter as much as I do.
