"The Lottery" Analyis Sheet
By: Tia Dillon
Theme
Society wrongfully designates scapegoats to bear the sins of the community. In the emotional short story by Shirley Jackson, the theme shows how one specific person is blamed for someone else's problems.
Summary
"It's not fair, it isn't right,"Mrs. Hutchison screamed, and they were upon her"(Jackson 5).
"Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now and she held her hands out desperately as the villages moved in on her"(Jackson 5).
The children had stones already. And someone gave little Davy Hutchinson few pebbles"(Jackson 5). These quotes help support the thesis by showing how the towns lottery was unfair and how the winner got killed. The town has the lottery to lower the population and kill them for all their sins.
