PSAT Cutoff Is October 3rd - Register NOW!
Attention Juniors! The PSAT is just around the corner and now is the time to reserve your spot. Seating is limited, so register soon! This is a great opportunity for scholarships and to see how well you would do on the SAT. The cost to take the PSAT is only $20. Head to the front office today to register!
Are you interested in the PSAT but aren’t a Junior? That’s okay, too! We may have space for you to try your hand as well. This is a perfect chance to familiarize yourself with the test in a low stress way! Ask about space availability in the front office. Questions? Ask your counselor or find Mr. Roberts in A104 for answers.

District Wide Earthquake Drill - Oct 16th
- will practice how to Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:16 a.m. on October 16
An earthquake drill is a drill used to practice in preparation for an earthquake. Schools in some areas conduct earthquake drills. Stop, drop and hold on is used during the drill.
Drop, Cover, and Hold On! Emergency management experts and other official preparedness organizations agree that "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" is the appropriate action to reduce injury and death during earthquakes. The ShakeOut is our opportunity to practice how to protect ourselves during earthquakes.
BEF Phone-A-Thon October 9-17th
Beaverton Education Foundation Phone-a-thon – OCTOBER 9-17!
Between October 9-17, hundreds of high school students and community volunteers will telephone Beaverton residents during the Beaverton Education Foundation’s annual Phone-a-thon, requesting donations to fund critical summer, classroom, and after-school programs across our District (such as, ACMA Art on the Go).
Last school year Beaverton Education Foundation’s 3000 donors helped fund 96 programs and activities that reached 22,261 students, benefiting 53 schools. Our goal this year is to fund 130 projects and reach 30,000 students at all 53 schools, in honor of our 30th anniversary supporting inspiration, innovation and success. Your financial support of BEF is vital and ensures that thousands of students benefit from these important hands-on projects and programs.
Costs of our phone-a-thon are underwritten by our generous sponsors, so that your tax-deductible donation can help more Beaverton kids. BEF thanks them for their support.

Did you know...Beaverton School District parents can create their own Canvas Parent Observer Accounts.
The Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) is used by many middle and high school teachers as an extension to in-class instruction. Teachers using Canvas can post assignments, give feedback, and communicate with students.
Parents or guardians do not need a Canvas account to monitor student progress, you can continue to use ParentVUE; however, you can create a Canvas account to view more detailed assignment information, view feedback and communicate with the teacher.
Think of Canvas as a virtual backpack, giving you a look at the day-to-day assignments. ParentVUE will still be the source for attendance and permanent record grades.
Visit the BSD Canvas for Parents webpage to learn more about how to create your own Canvas account, as well as answers to frequently asked questions.
BSD Communication About Lockouts
We received inquiries from parents about practices for communicating about lockouts following two instances of lockouts during the first week of school.
We encourage parents to watch our video outlining the difference between a “lockout” and a “lockdown.” A lockdown is called when there is a possible threat inside the school, while a lockout is called when there is a possible threat near the school or in the neighborhood.
The Beaverton School District does not typically send out parent notifications for lockouts for the following reasons:
- They are most often unrelated to what is happening inside the school.
- They are often due to police activity in the neighborhood.
- They are usually resolved quickly, often within minutes.
We always post a banner on our website when a lockout is in effect and is cleared. You can subscribe to our RSS feed so that you are always notified when a banner is placed on our website.
We do not typically send out notifications about lockouts via SchoolMessenger because the lockout will likely be resolved before the system is even finished sending out the notification. We do make exceptions to this practice if a lockout goes on for an extended period of time, or if it affects dismissal.
If a lockout happens during arrival, we work closely with our Transportation Department to hold or reroute buses as necessary, as well as with law enforcement agencies who provide support to ensure that students can be ushered into the school building safely.
The application timeline has changed for the 2019-2020 school year. The lottery application phase has been shortened to make Second Consideration applications available earlier. This will allow students more time to work on their applications and schools more time to review them.
The Beaverton School District is nationally recognized for high student achievement and innovative programs. Beaverton students in grades 6-12 have the opportunity to investigate learning options that best fit their academic needs. Students can choose their neighborhood school or apply for one of a number of learning options. Transportation is provided.
Applications for the 2019-2020 school year will be available starting Monday, October 15, 2018. Please plan to attend one or more of the open houses that are available. Students may only select one option on their application, so do some early investigation of the options online.
All applicants must reside within the Beaverton School District boundaries. Beginning October 15, current Beaverton School District students are able to apply online using their student ID. Resident students not currently attending a Beaverton school, or who do not have Internet access, will need to complete a paper application available online, or at any school office beginning October 15, 2018. Please give careful consideration to your choice of school. Once an application has been submitted, no changes will be allowed.
Applications must be received no later than Friday, December 7, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. (PST).

Attendance Matters!
Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing two days a month. That's about 18 days, or……10% of the school year. #EveryDayMatters
Good attendance habits are developed in the first month of the school year, and we want to reinforce that message with our campaign in these first weeks. We have developed a logo, newsletter article, social media graphics and posts. We have created a page on the Communications & Community Involvement staff intranet page. You can find all of these assets there, available to download. When ODE launches its campaign, we will upload those assets as well.
Attendance Facts:
- 1 in 6 students in Oregon is considered chronically absent.
- Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% of school days (about 2 days a month).
- By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of school.
- The academic impact of an absence is the same, whether the absence is excused or unexcused.
- Students who live in communities with high levels of poverty are four times more likely to be chronically absent than others.
Volunteers are critical to the success of our students and our schools. With more than 41,000 students in 53 schools, there are many ways a volunteer can help. Volunteers can help tutor or mentor a student, assist in the library or cafeteria, help with school beautification projects, judge a science fair, help coach a team and much more.
All volunteers need to complete an application and background check. Once the background check is cleared, a profile will be created. Through myvolunteerpage.com, volunteers can update personal information, view and sign-up for open volunteer needs, and communicate directly with the school Volunteer Coordinator.
Volunteers will be able to use this profile from their first volunteer activity to their last.
