A Message from Principal Bame
Dear Laurel Park Families,
Greetings and happy (almost) spring. As we finalize our end of year programming and prepare for the beginning of our 2022-23 school year, we have a few notes to share:
Student Illness: The Front Office has been overwhelmed with student sickness and parents are unsure about the return to school guidance. The return to school guidance has not been updated for student illness. If a student has symptoms of illness, parents have three options:
- The student remains home for 5 days
- The student has an alternative diagnosis from a medical professional (doctor's note)
- The student has a negative PCR/antigen COVID test (at-home tests are acceptable)
- Track Change Request Decisions: If you submitted a track change request, decisions will be shared by the beginning of May.
- Kindergarten Parent Orientation: June 2nd / 5:30 - 7:00 pm (on campus)
- Interested in a School Tour? https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0a4ca5a622a64-20221
- Do you want to limit your child's access to snacks or sweets in the cafeteria? Parents may block snack purchases or control certain days they may purchase through their child's lunch accounts. https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/getmain?requestAction=home
Thank you for supporting and partnering with our staff to ensure students love coming to school!
Kind regards,
Mrs. Bame

Saludos y feliz (casi) primavera.

Student Services Updates
Middle school transition has begun!
Parents, you should have received a letter from Mrs. Bame, as well as your student’s elective sheet for their specific middle school, so they could discuss with you and make their choices. Counselors will start meeting with students individually this week to register them for their electives, check in to see how they are feeling about this transition, and answer any questions they may have about middle school. Please reach out to your child’s counselor if you have any questions.
The Salem Middle Band Director will visit our 5th grade students during Specials this Thursday. He will show them the different instruments and tell them about the band program. For our Track 1 students, we are in the process of scheduling a band visit for when they return.

AIG Updates - March 2022
It's that time of the year again, when all Wake County Public Schools offer Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) testing for any student needing acceleration. Acceleration is the practice of assigning students to a higher grade level for a single subject, than is typically given to the student's age, for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities. SSA is an accelerative practice that allows students to show mastery of an elementary or middle school courses. Students must meet qualifying Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) criteria in grades K‐7 to take advanced academic content in Mathematics or English Language Arts. Nominated students for Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) will be assessed at their school, based upon their current grade level. Depending on their grade level and subject, this could include a multiple-choice test and/or a writing sample. Students can be nominated for SSA testing by either their teacher or parent/legal guardian. If interested, please talk with your students' classroom teacher.
Things for Parent/Legal Guardian's to Reflect Upon Before Making this Decision:
- Consider your student's social and emotional maturity.
- Remember your student will be taking classes with older peers.
- Consider your student's organizational skills and ability to focus.
- Can your student begin or complete projects by themselves?
- Consider that your student is skipping an entire year's worth of content and background knowledge.
- Some grade levels will take the course online. Can your student participate independently in this online course?
- Consider that the SSA class may be on a different schedule than your student's current grade.
- Talk with your student's current classroom teacher about skipping a whole grade level of content.
- Is my student currently performing with consistent 3's and 4's in the desired tested subject?
SSA Nomination, Testing and Acceptance Information
To be accepted into the SSA program, a student testing in Mathematics must score an 80% or above. A student testing in English-Language Arts must score an 85% or above on the Reading test and score a level 3 or 4 on the Writing test. The SSA nomination window will be open at all WCPSS schools for only one week. Track 1 students can register the week of February 21st - 25th and Tracks 2, 3 and 4 students can register the week of March 21st - 25th. We are not able to accept any late nominations due to the new testing platform. The SSA testing window will be for Tracks 1-3 students, April 4th - 14th and Track 4 students April 18th - April 29th. If you should have any questions, please email, our SSA Coordinator, Mrs. Stone at astone@wcpss.net.
The SSA Nomination Request Form is located here.
Thank you!
Mrs. Amy Stone

Box Tops is now mostly digital, one has to download the Box Tops app, shop as you normally would, then use the app to scan your store receipt within 14 days of purchase. The app will identify Box Tops products on your receipt and automatically credit your school’s earnings online. Twice a year, our school will receive a check.
There are still products out there that require you to cut out the box tops, we will collect those for as long as we have to. I believe PTA Teacher Reps has communicated with Teachers that the boxtops can be dropped in our PTA Mailbox
Feel free to use any of the images in the next Penguin Press and place the following link which shows families how to use the Box Tops App.
