Meet Jose Avegno
McNair is happy to welcome our new Crisis Intervention Teacher Jose Avegno, pictured above. While he’s new to this role, Mr. Avegno is not new to McNair – not only did he teach Language Arts here for ten years, he graduated from McNair himself, and still lives in JC with his wife and 3-year-old daughter.
“Students’ natural talent is just a starting point for success,” says Avegno. “It’s the effort that they put into their work that is going to account for most of their academic success.”
Mr. Avegno is an extra resource for students:
1) He is the point person for any student who needs extra academic supports
2) He has created a website to help students and parents access information on college readiness, learning strategies, and other resources.
3) In collaboration with guidance counselor Kisha Williams and Language Arts teacher Javier Persad, he will be launching a peer leadership program to smooth 9th-graders' transition to high school.
4) He will be providing workshops and one-on-one consultation on learning strategies
5) He is the anti-bullying specialist.

McNair's JROTC team excels in academic competition
Fielding its first team in over four years, McNair excelled in this past year’s national JROTC Junior Leadership and Academic Bowl (JLAB), making it to the finals, where they won 13 out of their 15 matches in the preliminary rounds and placed 5th out of 24 schools. JLAB is a yearly national competition involving all four branches of JROTC (Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines) as well as the Civil Air Patrol. The competition begins with over 2,000 U.S Army JROTC units. Members of McNair’s team included (pictured above, from left to right): C/Staff Sergeant Amy Seedhom, C/Staff Sergeant Calvin Weaver, C/Command Sergeant Major Mina Kamel, and Cadet/Captain Abdelrahman Hassan, led by Senior Army Instructor Lieutenant Colonel Richard Wasserman.
