I Wonder What Our Students Would Say
Relationships Before Rigor
Teach Like a Champion
Adapting to the Ever-Changing Student, By: Mike Hubbs
Relate our classrooms to being a team with a common goal. As teachers, we orchestrate the team to reach that goal. There are many different levels of how we can reach, "connect with", kids: Academic; Interests; Personality; etc. If we can tap into those areas, we can understand what works for our class (team). We almost need to be a jack of all trades. What works for one student (player), does not work for all. But if you can get to know just a little bit about each student's needs, and/or strengths, it makes for a stronger, more positive classroom. Being an effective teacher takes mutual respect, even if it means having to respect a twelve-year-old.
Yesterday, the Duke Blue Devils beat Gonzaga to advance to their 12th Final Four. Coach K, the coach of the Duke Blue Devils, has led this team, and different generations of players and teams, since the 1980's. He has found a way to stay current and adapt to his players (students). It reminds me of the need to always be learning and adapting to our students. In his post-game press conference, he said: "If you cannot continue to learn, you might as well retire." As we get older and more experienced as teachers, it is important to remember that we too need to adapt to an ever-changing clientele, who have different needs than maybe we had as kids. We may not fully understand the things they are dealing with, or even like the fact that we are asked to pick up where others fall short. However, it is the reality of what kids need today.
