Reading & Writing next week/Lectura y Escritura proxima semana
For this last week before break, students are being assessed in several different ways to determine what they have been able to remember from the past nine weeks. Students are taking district assessments in all areas, including reading, math, social studies, and science. Students are also taking grade-level common assessments in reading and math, as well as document-based writing post-tests. Finally, students are being assessed on their reading levels using the Fountas & Pinnell program. Report cards will be sent home after students return from winter break. Although it can be tempting to remove students from school a few days early before the Christmas break, please make sure your student is here and ready to learn every day until Friday the 18th to ensure that they complete all the assessments.
Meet our new classroom pets!/Conozca nuestras nuevas mascotas de la clase!
Meet our new classroom pets! They are mice, about two months old, and they’re here to stay. The one on the left in the picture is named Fauna, and the one on the right is named Flora. The students have been very excited to meet them! In writing, we have been working on creating booklets about how to take care of mice. When we return from the break, we will be using a variety of mouse-themed mentor texts to help us learn third grade skills and concepts.
How can I support my child during the break?
Winter vacation is a great opportunity for students to spend time with their families and take a small break from the daily grind at school. However, it is also a great opportunity for students to pursue learning in ways there may not be time for during the school year. I suggest visiting your local public library for a free storytime. After the story, be sure to ask your child about the story they listened to! You can also tell the librarian your child’s reading level and interests, and the librarian will help you find books that will keep your child interested through the holidays. When you’re at the grocery store, ask your child to help you add up the prices of the items you buy to practice some math, or when you bake those Christmas cookies, have your child help by reading out the recipe. Just make sure they stay engaged so their brains are ready when it’s time to return!
