From the Desk of Dr. Rodriguez
I can't remember a time when there wasn't a book in my father's hands. It didn't matter what it was -- an old classic like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn or a pretty terrifying one like It by Stephen King -- they were all precious in my father's eyes. He would tell us all about the book he was reading (yes, even the Stephen King ones) every Saturday and Sunday morning when we would have breakfast together. The enthusiasm and passion he showed about reading was amazing -- he couldn't wait to finish breakfast to continue reading! His love for fiction inspired me to become the connoisseur of books I am today, and the example he set in my life is one that can never be measured. I am forever grateful to my father for setting such a beautiful example in my life and for having shown me the worlds we can dive into just by picking up a book.
Obviously, a love for reading isn't something that is simply taught in the home. As educators, instilling a love of reading in our students is a critical component of our vision at Riviera. Fundamentally, a strong foundation in reading is at the core of every other subject area in school -- students need it to comprehend word problems in math to determine the operation they should use to find the solution; they need it to understand why some words are in bold type and others italicized in their social studies textbook; and they need to be able to decode the genus, species, family, and phylum of the countless creatures that roam the earth. Reading is also critical to succeed in life! Whether it's reading the menu of our favorite restaurant or reading the fine print when we close on the purchase of our first home, reading is an essential life skill that we need command of at all times. This week, we celebrated the writings of one very famous, much loved children's author, Dr. Seuss, during Read Across America Week. Students donned their craziest hats, outfits, socks, and pajamas to recognize and appreciate the work of someone who has inspired so many to write their own books and create their own worlds. The writings of Dr. Seuss help educators instill that love of reading by using invented places and characters to tell stories that ignite the limitless imagination each of us has inside. We hope that you have enjoyed this week as much as we have and that you show off your own love of reading by picking up a great book every now and then -- trust me, your children are watching!
Have a wonderful weekend, and make sure to check out our next edition of Friday at 4:00 when we come back from Spring Break!
Sincerely,
Dr. Rodriguez

We had to miss out on all the fun of our awesome Riviera Carnival last year due to the pandemic, but thankfully, we were able to hold our annual carnival this year. AND WHAT A BLAST IT WAS! Not only were the rides amazing, but the food was delicious, the location was GORGEOUS, and the attendees were the best ever! THANK YOU, Riviera Schools Parents Club, for making this year's Carnival absolutely incredible. Enjoy some highlights from the event below.
