SOAR Palmdale Updates

Principal's Message

As principal of SOAR High School, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to SOAR High School - Palmdale! We are all excited to have students on campus - filling our classrooms with energy and enthusiam for learning! We endeavor to help every student feel welcomed, connected, and a part of our SOAR family. Additionally, at SOAR, we have a strong foundation oin Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) principles. It is our mission to provide a supportive, flexible, and academically enriched environment to ensure all students are college ready and can find success in our global society. As such, our teachers have spent the summer planning and preparing for the upcoming school year!

We hope that you will find our website and my weekly SOAR Updates both helpful and informative. SOAR Updates is emailed, texted, and shared on the app with parents, students, and staff on Friday evenings, and we upload them to the SOAR website ( under the "About" Tab then "Updates." Additionally, we maintain several social media sites. If you want to stay current with what's happening on SOAR High School's campus, follow us on Instagram @soarhsprincipal or @soarhighschool

I am honored to serve as the principal of SOAR High School's Lancaster and new Palmdale campus. It is truly a privilege to be a part of a community where parents, teachers, and students care for each other and strive to build positive relationships that support academic and social growth.

Once again, welcome! Let's make it a great year at SOAR together!

With Gratitude,

Wendi Johnston

NOTE: The First Week's Schedule has Changes...

Please note, our first week's schedule is different than a regular week at SOAR High School Palmdale.

MONDAY (Friday Release Time) 8:30 - 2:35

TUESDAY (Mon-Thurs. Schedule) 8:30 - 3:35

WEDNESDAY (Mon-Thurs. Schedule) 8:30 - 3:35

THURSDAY (Minimum Day) 8:30 - 1:05

FRIDAY (Mon-Thurs. Schedule) 8:30 - 3:35

We have a new bell schedule!

In 2018, the California State Senate passed Senate Bill 328 requiring middle schools and high schools to begin no earlier than 8:00 am and 8:30 am respectively. This law went into effect on July 1, 2022. As such, SOAR High School has a new bell schedule. Additionally, a new "flex" day (Friday) has been built into the schedule as well as minimum days. Below, I've published the SOAR High School bell schedule for the 22-23 school year.

Wellness Corner

Evidence suggests there are 5 steps you can take to improve your mental health and wellbeing. Trying these things could help you feel more positive and able to get the most out of life!

1. Connect with others - good relationships are important to your mental wellbeing.

2. Be physcially active - being active is not only good for your physical health and fitness, but it can also improve your mental wellbeing.

3. Learn new skills - learning new skills can boost self-confidence, build a sense of purpose, and hep you connect with others.

4. Give to others - acts of giving and kindness can help you feel more positive.

5. Pay attention to the present moment - be mindful in mind and body.

Be a STAR!

STUDENTS, don't forget to Be a STAR no matter where you are -- that's in the classroom, on campus, connected online, or in the community -- again, we're promoting Self advocating, Teachable, Accountable, and Respectful leaders -- STARs -- here at SOAR!

SOAR Stars are also life-long learners and self-advocates who solve the most pressing challenges through an unwavering pursuit of knowledge, innovation, and collaboration, becoming engaged and productive leaders in their communities.

We ask that students and families please review our student handbook:

It's important that all members of the SOAR community are familiar with behavioral expectation, academic integrity policies, dress code, etc. Students will be getting a copy of the planner through AVID classes soon. Again, until then, we ask that you review our online version of this document.

SOAR Self-screening Procedures

Students will need to do a self-screening daily prior to coming to campus; this is in line with the AVUHSD. There is nothing that students will need to submit or show for entry onto the high school campus. The self-screening questions include the following:

  • Have you been in close physical contact in the last 14 days with anyone known to have COVID-19 or anyone who has any symptoms of COVID-19?

  • Are you currently quarantined because you may have been exposed to a person with COVID-19?

  • Has anyone in your household recently tested positive for COVID-19?

  • Are you currently awaiting test results for a COVID-19 test?

  • Are you currently experiencing any of the following symptoms:

    • Fever at or above 100.4 degrees

    • Chills, sweating and/or repeated shaking or shivering

    • Cough

    • Sore throat

    • Mild or moderate difficulty breathing/shortness of breath for unknown reasons

    • Muscle aches or body aches

    • Vomiting or diarrhea

    • Loss of taste or smell

    • Runny or congested nose

    • Headache

    • Feeling unusually tired or weak

If you answered yes to any of these questions, DO NOT report to school. Stay home and email to report the absence.
