AASAP Class Observation Day
Wednesday, February 19, 2020
Observation Day is when the parents of AASAP (African American Student Action Planners) attend school with their students. Parents will be on campus shadowing their students for the day. This is your opportunity to further inform parents about your program although we are not expecting you to change your lesson. You are not expected to do anything extra, but if you have things parents need to know, you have this opportunity.
Parents will begin in the library where they receive expectations, have a snack and learn more about AASAP. In the afternoon, parents will have the opportunity to attend a workshop addressing financial literacy or college plan
Two Short Wednesday Spring Offerings: Narcan Training & Stop the Bleed Training!
This Spring we will offer two optional medical trainings on campus for any staff members who are interested in learning about how to address opioid overdoses and/or stopping bleeding injuries. The first will be Narcan training on Wednesday March 11th 2:45-4:00 (during department time) and the second will be Stop the Bleed training on Wednesday April 22nd 2:45-4:00 (during pathway time). If you are interested in either, please RSVP using this form!
More information on Narcan Training: Learn how to use naloxone to save lives, and receive one free opioid overdose rescue kit! Overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States, but we know by equipping people with knowledge and naloxone (Narcan), these deaths are preventable and reversible. Join us for a training conducted by the Overdose Prevention Education and Naloxone Distribution (OPEND) Project, a project through the HIV Education and Prevention Project of Alameda County (HEPPAC). OPEND is a county-wide program aimed to decrease overdose death rates in our county and provide skills to community members in order to save lives.
This training will cover a range of topics including the current opioid overdose context and trends, overdose prevention, overdose recognition and response, the use of naloxone, information about the California Good Samaritan law and more. Training will also distribute some Opioid Overdose Rescue Kits containing three doses of the life-saving medicine naloxone (Narcan). Please contact Michaella Jones, OPEND Coordinator with any specific questions or concerns at (510) 394-2552, or at mjones@casasegura.org.

Teacher to Principal Pipeline Scholarship Opportunity … for Bay Area teacher leaders working with ELL students
Oakland International High School Learning Lab is excited to announce that it is partnering with OUSD, SFUSD, and WCCUSD to host an administrator credentialing pipeline that emphasizes supporting English Language Learners in the urban middle and high school context. Scholarships will be awarded to teacher leaders in the region who will come together to form a cohort of future urban secondary administrators. In August of 2020, the cohort will enter a tier 1 administrative credentialing program at the Reach Institute.
The Scholarship: The Oakland International Learning Lab will provide 10 cohort members with a $5,000 scholarship towards the $9,000 tuition cost of the Reach Institute Preliminary Admin Credential Leadership Program.
Classes: Evening classes will meet once a week on the campus of Oakland International High School. In addition to completing Reach Institute coursework, cohort members will participate in 4 days of specialized learning experiences designed to address the needs of the growing ELL population in the Bay Area. After 1 year, cohort members will receive their preliminary administrative credential.
More information and links to the application can be found here.
Please share this opportunity with strong middle and high school teacher leaders in your district.
CTE Credentials
The High School Linked Learning Office has been working hard to develop a clear, equitable, and compliant process for the CTE credential incentive funds. Funding will be award to teachers on a first-come, first-served basis up until December 31, 2019, with required deliverables accepted until February 28, 2020.
Some questions that folks might have about the incentive funds for CTE credentials:
At what point can the teacher expect to receive the incentive funds?
The funding is attached to deliverables outlined in the application, which are submitted after completion of coursework.
I took courses in a previous year. an I submit an application now?
Unfortunately, we can’t post-date this opportunity. We hope that we can support your continued education in other ways in the future.
I’m interested. What are my next steps?
Check this out. Our understanding is that the next class starts in January, so plan carefully.
If you have further questions on CTE credentialing, please feel free to reach out to Daniel Spinka at daniel.spinka@ousd.org.
Have you given any Incompletes? If so, this is what you need to do!
Unless you complete a grade change form, the student still has an incomplete. Teachers have 10 days to change an “Incomplete.” Please see Ms. Ethel to change an incomplete.
What does a D mean?
A D grade allows students to:
Not repeat a class
A D grade does not allow students to:
Graduate A-G compliant
Use that grade to apply for colleges
Does not help the student earn a 2.0 GPA
Reminders
Attendance
Teachers. This is a reminder that your attendance must be taken in the first 15 minutes of class. Oakland Tech’s teacher attendance completion rate is 85%. We need to be at 90 % to keep from being audited and we need your help. Students are not permitted off-campus during class times.
Staff Meetings
Teachers, staff meetings are mandatory and those that do not attend will be docked. Please sign in for all meetings.
ChromeBook Carts
Teachers if you have a Chromebook cart housed in your classroom we are counting on your support to keep the Chromebooks locked up and in good condition. At the end of the day, you must lock the Chromebook Carts up and make sure the carts are secured to the wall. We have found carts like this at the end of the day. Please show the carts some love and secure our resources.
