Notable People and Events
2/2-Frederick McKinley Jones left his mark with the development of refrigeration equipment, receiving over 40 patents for it. In the 1930s, he began inventing automatic refrigerated air-cooling units for trucks, trains, ships, and planes, which helped the preservation of food. His creation, the Thermo King, allowed people to eat fresh food year-round. His work also contributed to the preservation of blood and medicine, proving to be particularly useful during WWII. In 1991, he became the first African American to receive the National Medal of Technology that was presented to his widow by President George H.W. Bush.
2/3- Bebe Moore Campbell was an American author, journalist, teacher, and mental health advocate who worked tirelessly to shed light on the mental health needs of the Black community and other underrepresented communities. She founded NAMI-Inglewood in a predominantly Black neighborhood to create a space that was safe for Black people to talk about mental health concerns. Throughout her time as an advocate, Campbell made her way to DC. On June 2, 2008, Congress formally recognized Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month to bring awareness to the unique struggles that underrepresented groups face regarding mental illness in the US.
2/4- So many of us know George Washington Carver as the man famous for giving us peanut butter (bless him), but he’s responsible for much more. As an agricultural chemist, in an effort to increase the profitability of sweet potatoes and peanuts (which thrived in the South as opposed to dwindling cotton supply), Carver began conducting experiments in 1896 and created 518 new products from the crops. They include ink, dye, soap, cosmetics, flour, vinegar, and synthetic rubber. He publicly revealed his experiments in 1914.

Mindset Matters!
Each newsletter will have 1 or 2 of the mindsets that are the focus for the week. I will also share here what students in some of our classes are seeing and learning. Week of Jan. 31 https://7mindsets.h5p.com/content/1291363664651274168
Here is a video https://safeshare.tv/x/ss5d111543c59a2 from Unit #1- Everything is Possible. The final mindset in this unit is "Act and Adjust!" Good info on learning from and the benefit of "failure."
I truly believe in this work and it is needed more than ever in the lives of our teens... but honestly, it is GREAT info for us all! I welcome your feedback. Call me 772-419-5758 or email me ljudd@irsc.edu

Every day is a celebration!
Make a Difference Mondays! February starts the month of Caring. See the Friday newsletter for several opportunities to make a difference doing something you enjoy and benefits others.
Take Care Tuesdays! Here are some tips for taking care of your emotional health. 1. Create and maintain a healthy daily routine. 2. Set reasonable expectations on yourself and 3. Stay connected to family and friends.
Way to Go Wednesdays! Today we want to shout out Xander Goldman who noticed a wallet on the ground during our assembly and ensured it was returned to its owner. Thanks for being alert and doing the right thing!
Thankful Thursdays! When is the last time you have told someone that you are grateful they are in your life? Take a minute to think of 3 people you are grateful for and commit to writing a note or sending a quick text to say that you are thinking of them and how happy you are to have them in your life. Just do it! It could save a life.
Fun Fact Fridays! We all know February is the shortest month of the year, is Black History Month, and the month of love with Valentine's Day, but here’s some more to know about this month. The name of February comes from the Latin word “februum” which means purification. It was named after a purification ritual which was like an early Roman spring cleaning festival.
