Childhood
Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 17, 1963. He was the fourth of five children born to James and Deloris.Soon after Michael's birth, James and Deloris felt that the streets of Brooklyn were unsafe to raise a family, so they moved the family to Wilmington, North Carolina. As a youngster, Michael immediately became interested in sports. However, it was baseball not basketball that was his first love. He would play catch in the yard with his father, who loved baseball. He soon started to play basketball to try and follow in the footsteps of his older brother, Larry, whom he idolized growing up.
A Major Challenge he had to overcome
At Laney High School, as a sophomore, Michael decided to try out for the Varsity Basketball team. He was nervous but confident so he tried out. He then had found out that he hadn't made the team and he was depressed. When he came home, he locked himself in his room and cried, he was disappointed but he hadn't lost his confidence.
Major Accomplishments and Successes
The next summer after being cut from his high school basketball team Michael grew four inches and practiced tirelessly. The hard work paid as he averaged 25 points per game in his last two years and was selected to the McDonald's All-American Team as a senior.
Some of Michael Jordan's accomplishments are: NBA Champion (1991-1993,1996-1998), NBA Finals MVP (1991-1993,1996-1998), NBA MVP, NBA All-star award, NBA All-star game MVP, All NBA First team, All NBA second team, NBA defensive player of the year, NBA All-defensive first team, NBA Rookie of the year, NBA scoring champion, NBA steals champion, NBA slam dunk contest champion, NBA playoffs all-time leading scorer, Chicago Bulls all-time leading scorer, AP Athlete of the year, USA Basketball male athlete of the year, NCAA Champion, National college player of the year, and the ACC player of the year.
How He Demonstrates a Growth Mindset
Michael Jordan demonstrates a growth mindset because he never gave up. He got cut from his high school basketball team but he never lost his confidence, he kept trying and practicing, he worked hard at what he wanted and he achieved it. He practiced tirelessly, he wanted to be something in his life and he got what he wanted just because he set his mind to it and believed he could do it. Now Michael is a legend, just because of that one decision to keep trying and moving forward even though he had been cut.
