Mr. Forde's PE/Health/Sr. Forde Educación Física / Salud
Physical Education classes are running super smoothly thanks to the cooperation and hard work of the majority of the students. It also helps that as a whole Physical Education team, we have been trying to stress the importance of changing into their PE uniform. When the students are changing into their uniforms, it shows that they understand the importance of responsibility in remembering and cleaning their uniforms. It is also ensuring good hygiene characteristics so that the students are not sweating in the clothes that they wore to school. So, parents please check in with your son/daughter and help them be successful by helping them launder their PE uniform (weekly), and reminding them to bring it back on Mondays. Your support at home has been great, and we want to keep up the positive communication between the students, parents, and PE team.
As you would probably guess, we are inside for the rest of the year (2019), and early into next year (2020). Mr. Forde’s classes finished up Health the week before Halloween. Ms. Campbell’s class are currently in the Health classes, and have now officially introduced the new Health curriculum for the 6th grade. The remaining 3 classes are in the middle of the basketball unit, and have started their class 3 on 3 tournament(s). Mr. Forde is currently in the process of getting the climbing wall back into the PE rotation so that the students can learn some life lessons in the Adventure Education curriculum. Hopefully the students will get to use the wall before Winter break this year!!
Art/Arte
In Art class we are in the middle-to-end of the Painting Unit in all grades. In 6th Grade we are learning about color wheels, and how to mix tints and shades in tempera paint by adding either white or black to a base hue. Students are applying these new skills to create a color wheel Mandala, inspired by the sand mandalas created by Tibetan monks.
In 7th Grade, students are learning about how to use symbolism to represent themselves via Medieval inspired Coats of Arms. Students create a shield design out of symbols that represent themselves as individuals, and then learn several different watercolor techniques in order to paint their coat of arms shields and bring them to full glory.
And finally in 8th Grade, students are using acrylic paint to explore texture in paint as their create their own, 3D cardboard shields inspired by the painted shields of the Wahgi people of Papua New Guinea. Students consider the importance of using limited color palettes in order to create their shield designs, and explored the idea that all art is influenced and inspired by the things around them, as exemplified by the famous Wahgi shields that had the American superhero “The Phantom” painted on them.
