Library Cards!
Does your child have a library card?
Please make sure your student has their own library card with the Framingham Public Library (FPL), in preparation for summer reading.
The FPL will now accept a digital library card registration form that parents/caregivers can fill out for their student. Click here for the link to register your child for a library card.
Registering digitally is preferred but if you would rather fill out a paper form, attached are printable forms in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Deadline: Please sign up by May 12th so your child will have their card in time for the field trip to the library.
Additional information can be obtained on the FPL website. Please contact your librarian directly with any questions.

Academic Conversations
Here at Stapleton we are practicing academic conversations in our classrooms. We know students learn more when they have the opportunity to share their ideas with others. We are practicing what it means to be an active listener and how to respond to our classmates to better understand what they are saying. Students are showing they are listening by using eye contact, nodding and smiling. Students are responding in full sentences to classmates by asking questions about what they have heard and taking turns talking. We are hoping children will practice these skills at home with their parents.
Literacy at Home
I encourage you to explore new life, spring and habitats with Start with a Book: Homes and Habitats
Start with a Book offers caregivers lots of engaging ideas for getting kids hooked on reading, exploring and learning.
"We've gathered up a great collection of books, activities, apps, and websites for learning all about cooking and food. Try pairing fiction with nonfiction books and exploring different genres (like poetry and biographies) and formats (like graphic novels and audio books). You'll be creating your own "text sets" — collections of texts focused on a specific topic, such as dinosaurs. Reading widely in this way helps children build background knowledge, vocabulary, and comprehension skills." (Reading Rockets)
Another great resource is Storyvoice Read-Alouds. "Storyvoice was designed in response to the Syrian refugee crisis to help disadvantaged children keep reading and learning while out of school. With the onset of COVID-19 and global school closures, we expanded the Storyvoice experience to reach more kids in need. Through the process, we have been able to create a vibrant international reading community, and an exciting new technology that helps every child, everywhere, regularly enjoy the benefits and joy of reading with others. Experience today's top children's book titles with the creators behind the stories, as authors and illustrators read live, answer questions and invite audience members to read along with them!" (Scholastic)
I am also sharing a website to answer questions you might have about your child’s reading and writing development. Reading 101: A Guide for Parents: Supporting your child’s reading and writing at home
Have a wonderful week reading and learning!

Character Trait of the Month
The character education theme of the month for May is “Compassion”. We have defined compassion as “Showing concern or empathy for others”. This month students will engage in lessons focused on working on understanding others’ feelings, and showing empathy and kindness to them. Showing compassion can be easy to do with people with whom we are close to, but students will learn the importance of showing compassion to all people they may encounter in their lives. Students will learn that choosing to show others compassion will bring more peace, happiness, and overall feelings of well being into their own lives as well as the lives of others. Through morning meetings, focused read-alouds, and social emotional learning blocks in their classrooms, students will learn about the importance of compassion. Students will work on recognizing others feelings, and practice acts of kindness, empathy, and compassion. We welcome families to engage in conversations with their children to strengthen their understanding of the importance compassion plays in their everyday lives.
