Eagle Update: October 16, 2020
Barton Hills Elementary
Hello BHE Families:
We have had another great week of school and are continuing to tweak our systems and instructional models to support students and parents. For the week of October 19th, we were able to invite any student for in-person instruction whose parent indicated an on campus instruction preference in the last Parent Pulse Survey. We are able to phase in all of our learners a week ahead of the district phase in plan and still stay within the 50% facility capacity guidelines.
If you are wanting to change your child's learning preference, please see the guidance below
- Transitioning from on-campus learning to remote off-campus learning will occur when a student/parent or guardian chooses to do so.
- Transitioning from remote off-campus learning to on-campus learning:
- The first request will occur as soon as possible with at least 5 days notice.
- The second request will occur at the beginning of the next grading period.
- You will need to email the principal at kathryn.achtermann@austinisd.org to communicate the change request.
Regardless of whether your child is returning in person or continuing with remote learning, we're looking forward to another week of teaching and learning. Amazingly enough, the end of the first nine weeks is quickly approaching. Teachers will be finalizing grades by October 26th and report cards will be generated around October 28th. My understanding is the district will email parents a link to the report card this year - we will not be printing them and sending home in a separate envelope.
I've been asked by many parents if BHE will be a voting site on November 3rd and it will not. That day is a Student Holiday and Teachers will be engaging in Professional development but no one other than staff will be in the building on that day.
Thank you for being a part of the Wonderful Barton Hills Elementary Community! We appreciate all of your support and flexibility as we've started this school year like no other!

***The Austin ISD Board of Trustees approved an update to the 2020-21 school year calendar, changing the Oct. 12 student holiday to Election Day, Nov. 3.
To accommodate a student holiday for Election Day, the district moved the professional development day, previously scheduled for Monday, Oct. 12, to Nov. 3, federally recognized Election Day.
This change will not affect the number of instructional days or the daily instructional time for students. A student holiday for Election Day will decrease the number of people on campuses that may potentially be used as voting sites for the general election. It will also encourage a lower capacity for a campus and allow for greater social distancing for voters to assist in limiting the spread of COVID-19.
