Counseling Center Spotlight: Adjusting to Graduate School
There is a myth that since you have completed an undergraduate degree, you should automatically know how to navigate graduate school. That myth is false. Adjusting to graduate school can be stressful and challenging for some students. Some may be adapting to a new city and a university setting; others may also be balancing different and multiple responsibilities (e.g., working full-time, being a TA, or taking care of family responsibilities) than before. Not to mention, the workload and academic requirements will be more demanding. Additionally, while some graduate students may be attending class in-person, many are now completing their degrees on-line. With each students’ unique experience in mind, adjustment to graduate school will likely go beyond the very first day of your journey. In fact, adjustments might occur at the start of every semester, whether it is your very first one or your final year in the program.
Here are some helpful ways to adjust to graduate school:
Take Your Time
Explore and Learn Your Surroundings
Set Your Priorities or Goals

Team GSO: What We're Watching
Disney Junior
"As a relatively new parent, the TV has been taken over by my 4-year old. While we limit her screen time, I know the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse better than I should admit."
- MarkHouse Hunters
"As new homeowners, my husband and I love to watch HGTV shows that give us some great ideas on how to take care of our house! Recently, we have been watching International House Hunters that take us to many fascinating places across the whole world. It's fun to learn about different cultures and see how other people live! Check it out sometimes, you will be surprised as to what you can learn in this show!"
- Marie
The Great British Bake Off
"I have been such a big fan of the current season on Netflix (Collection 7) so far! Each year, a group of amateur bakers compete against each other in a series of rounds, attempting to impress a group of judges with their baking skills. I'm particularly fond of the Showstoppers!"
