HALO HIGHLIGHT
The counseling team at St. Louis Catholic wants to personally thank you for a successful PSAT test day. We were able to successfully submit test documents for all students who tested. We want to apologize for the delay in dismissing students yesterday. The beginning portion of the test requires that students complete some demographic information, and we had quite a few students struggle with recalling basic information such as a mailing address and ZIP code in this digital age. I know this is a shock to us as adults, but if you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Our digital devices now store all that information and can auto-fill those pesky details for us! As students are required to know this type of information for the ACT and SAT, it’s a great reminder for us as parents to review those details that our digital native children may not remember.
A benefit of taking the PSAT in 9th-11th grades is that students get the opportunity to see what college admissions testing looks like – both from a knowledge and a mental stamina standpoint. I know our students were exhausted from four long hours of testing. It is our hope that we can help build mental stamina as our students progress at St. Louis Catholic. Once we have the PSAT scores back, the counseling team will hold a Parent Night showing you how to interpret the scores, as well as how to help your student improve on areas of weakness and develop that mental stamina so they can achieve post-secondary success after high school.
As always, please don’t hesitate to call or email us with your questions and concerns.
Sincerely,
Susan Holmes (A-J) 436.7275 Ext. 228

"ReNew/Clean Up Day" at Orange Grove-Graceland Cemeteries: Saturday, Oct. 20, 8 a.m.
In an effort to Restore and ReNew Orange Grove-Graceland Cemeteries, a group of concerned citizens in Lake Charles is requesting volunteers for a “ReNew/Clean Up Day." These two cemeteries are privately owned and are not managed by the City of Lake Charles, so the upkeep of the graves/tombs are left to family members, if any are still with us. There are over 10,000 individuals buried between the two cemeteries, many of whom are U.S. veterans. For additional information please email renewswla@gmail.com.
Gulf Coast EGGfest benefiting Holden's Hope at Lake Charles Civic Center: Saturday, Oct. 27, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
The inaugural Gulf Coast EGGfest, sponsored by Stine, is seeking student volunteer assistance in shifts of 2.5 hours, mainly with door admission and concessions. All sales benefit Holden's Hope. For more information and to sign up for a shift, please email Chavanne Stine.

Saints Faculty Spotlight: Dax Campbell
Meet Saints math teacher Dax Campbell, who instructs Dual Enrollment Math 170, AP Calculus, Calculus and Pre-Calculus Honors:
1. Hometown? I was actually born and raised in DeRidder, but we moved to Sulphur right before I started high school.
2. Favorite quote? I am not good at picking favorites. With that being said, I have a few quotes that have influenced me and formed my philosophy as an educator:
"Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you." -John 15:13-14
"A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be different, because I was important in the life of a child." -Forest E. Witcraft
3. Favorite food? In my opinion, you can never go wrong with a good gumbo or crawfish etouffee.
4. Best moment(s) at St. Louis Catholic so far? This past month has provided me with a lot of really cool experiences at St. Louis Catholic. It is difficult to pinpoint my "best" moment. I have two moments that have really stayed with me during these past few weeks. The first moment took place in my classroom. I gave my students a challenging problem to work on their own. When most students started looking to me for aid or assistance, I had one student very quickly take over as the role of teacher. This student took over my computer and notes and taught all of his peers how to solve the problem without any prompting. It is always reassuring as a teacher whenever you are able to witness those moments of student learning and student teaching take place.
My other moment took place during our first Wednesday adoration session. On Wednesdays when we have Mass, we provide students with the opportunity to stop by the dance studio during lunch for a few minutes of adoration time. The first week we offered this to the students, I was completely amazed at the number of students who took advantage of the opportunity to pop in and spend a few minutes with Jesus. It is truly a wonderful thing to witness.
5. What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend? If I am not spending my weekend planning and preparing for the upcoming week, you will probably find me wrapped up in a book or re-watching something on Netflix (probably "The Office" or "Friends").
