Jan Richardson, Ph.D., America’s leading expert in guided reading, is a former teacher (k-college), reading specialist, Reading Recovery® teacher leader, and designer of staff development. She is currently an education consultant, providing schools with customized workshops and classroom demonstrations. Dr. Richardson’s best-selling Next Step Collection began with the publication of Next Step Guided Reading (Scholastic, 2009). The updated collection now includes The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading; The Guided Reading Teacher’s Companion: Prompts and Discussion Starters; Next Step Guided Reading in Action; and Next Step Guided Reading Assessment co-authored with Maria P. Walther. Jan also worked with Michele Dufresne from Pioneer Valley Books to develop Literacy Footprints: A Complete System for Supporting Guided Reading, which has lesson cards that follow Jan’s Next Step framework. Her newest book, Next Step Forward in Reading Intervention (Scholastic, 2018), written with Ellen Lewis, describes a powerful, short-term intervention that quickly accelerates striving readers. Teaching Emergent and Early Guided Reading
Guided Reading is a critical component of a balanced literacy program that
allows teachers to diversify their reading instruction to meet the individual
needs of their students. This two-day course will help teachers increase
their knowledge of the reading process and learn how to plan and teach
powerful guided reading lessons for emergent and early readers. Topics
include:
- Getting ready for guided reading by establishing independent routines
- Using formative assessments to identify a focus for instruction
- Forming flexible groups
- Selecting appropriate texts
- Teaching targeted small-group lessons that integrate reading, writing and word study:
Pre-A lessons for students who identify less than 40 letters
Emergent lessons for students reading at text levels A-C
Early lessons for students reading at text levels D-I
- Prompting for strategic actions
- Teaching foundational skills through guided word study
- Supporting the writing process through guided writing
- Accelerating struggling readers
- Challenging advanced readers

Teaching Transitional & Fluent Guided Reading
Small group guided reading, an important part of a comprehensive reading
program, allows teachers to diversify their reading instruction to meet the
individual needs of their students. This two-day course will help teachers
increase their knowledge about comprehension and learn how to teach guided
reading lessons to transitional and fluent readers. Topics include:
- Teaching independent literacy routines
- Understanding the reading process
- Analyzing assessments to pinpoint an instructional focus
- Selecting appropriate texts that match the focus for instruction
- Planning small group lessons that integrate reading, writing, and word study
- Prompting for self-monitoring, decoding, fluency and vocabulary
- Extending comprehension
- Accelerating struggling readers
- Improving writing skills through guided writing
