April 13, 2020 Lions Lines Updates
Learning at Home Update
Dear CFISD Family,
With the extension of Learning At Home through May 1, 2020, we want to provide you an update on grading for the 3rd and 4th marking periods. We are committed to support the learning of every student impacted by this situation. In order to ensure learning gaps are not intensified, CFISD will continue utilizing every resource available to help your child succeed.
Please review the details below regarding the 3rd & 4th Marking Periods:
3rd Marking Period (MP3)
Report cards will be available through the Home Access Center beginning April 20, 2020.
Students who failed Marking Period 3 will have additional opportunities to recover their grade for a maximum of a 70.
4th Marking Period (MP4) Grading Process
No grades were taken for MP4 before April 13, 2020. Prior to this date (March 23-April 9), students, parents, and teachers have been able to gain familiarity and stability with remote learning options and digital platforms.
Beginning the week of April 13th, teachers will be delivering lessons over selected TEKS in addition to the Learning At Home curriculum. The lessons will be selected to deepen student learning and facilitate the understanding of challenging concepts. Teachers will continue to check in with students and provide office hours in order to respond to parent and student needs.
Grading Guidelines Beginning April 13, 2020
PK-1st Grade
Teachers will record the weekly completion of selected learning assignments in each content area from the Learning At Home curriculum (curriculum packet or online).
Students will complete 6 selected learning assignments for the 4th marking period in each content area (ELAR, Math, Science, Social Studies).
Grades 2-5
Teachers will take one grade per week in each content area from the Learning at Home curriculum (curriculum packet or online) which has been provided. The grade will be taken from the weekly lesson delivered.
Students will receive a weekly grade in each content area (ELAR, Math, Science, Social Studies).
All grades will be weighted equally.
We know that nothing can replace in-person instruction and interaction between students and teachers. While our buildings remain closed and professional staff work remotely, we remain committed to supporting student learning. We encourage all students to engage daily in the Learning at Home curriculum.
As always, if you have specific questions about your student’s education, please contact the appropriate staff member on your student’s campus.
Teacher questions?
Parents,
We will be offering Office Hours for students and parents to reach out to your child’s teacher for any questions or assistance on any assignments via email or phone call. During this hour, the teachers will be available for instant communication or response via phone call, email back or zoom for assistance with an assignment. These office hours will be daily for each grade level to ensure immediate assistance if needed.
Music News from Ms. Parker
Hi everyone! I hope everyone is staying healthy and enjoying this time with your family at home. Here are some more musical resources for everyone this week to explore. As always, these are completely optional, but they are fun and I hope you check them out!
Carnegie Hall’s Listening Adventures: Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra – This is an adventure game through the instrument families. There is no need to create an account – the local game works fine. You just can’t have more than one game going at a time per computer. It does use Adobe Flash, so may not be compatible with all devices. This will be a review for 4th and 5th graders and a good introduction for Kinder-3rd. https://listeningadventures.carnegiehall.org/
4th and 5th graders: Check out this website. They will be updating it with new lessons each week. This week is all about Vivaldi, who we studied earlier this year. You should recognize some of his music. There are also music review games and biographies of other composers. https://www.classicsforkids.com/
Here is a fun activity for the whole family! Take a couple of those plastic eggs you have lying around the house right now and fill them with different materials – ex: rice, beans of different sizes, coins, pebbles, sand, or anything else you can think of. I highly suggest taping the eggs closed so the objects inside don’t go flying . Shake the eggs and listen to the sounds they make. Are they loud, soft, high, low, etc.? Now pick your favorite sounding egg and use it as an egg shaker to keep the beat of different songs. You can sing some songs we sang in class or pick something you like to listen to at home and find the beat of the song. See if you can find songs that go different speeds. 1st-5th graders, see if you can also identify the rhythm (remember, the rhythm is the way the words go ). You can even switch back and forth between playing the beat and the rhythm or team up with a sibling or parent and one person plays the beat and the other plays the rhythm. Have fun with this and see how many different ways you can play a song with only egg shakers!
And finally, here is your weekly episode of The House on Music Street! I challenge you to try to do the canon with a sibling or parent this week. It would be even cooler if you could do it with 4 people! It is one of my favorite canons to sing. Older students, if you are feeling really adventurous, try doing the ostinato (that’s the “toboggan, toboggan, toboggan, rest” part) as pats on your lap or claps while you say the rest of the tongue twister – it’s a challenge this week! http://www.viewpure.com/0HbjI6LNqf4?ref=bkmk
As always, feel free to email me at Heather.Parker@cfisd.net if you have any questions and also send pics and videos of your family doing some of these activities. I miss all of you so much and can’t wait until we are back at school together!
Hello artists! From Ms. K.
Hello artists!
I hope you are all staying healthy and busy! This week should be beautiful outside, and since it is Earth Month, let’s do some outdoor art activities!
*Note to parents: These activities are suggestions and completely optional! They are simply ideas to help break up that quarantine boredom and get those creative juices flowing! Any grade level (and any family members!) are free to get involved! If you participate in any of our art challenges, please share so we can see! Options are: -Post a picture on Instagram and tag our studio account @hesartstudio to be featured! -Email pictures to me to then be used (with your permission and credit to the artist) at kirsten.gould@cfisd.net
Art is a wonderful way to exercise our brains and spread positivity!
THIS WEEK’S ART CHALLENGES:
1. Make your own sidewalk chalk PAINT! I have seen so many of you decorating your driveways during this time away, and it has brought me so much joy! Here’s another way you can add some beauty to your day!
You will need:
1 cup water
1 1/2 cups cornstarch
2 tbsp. baking soda
3-4 drops food coloring
First, mix together the water, cornstarch and baking soda until fully combined. The baking soda helps keep the cornstarch from getting all goopy. This will make a basic white “paint”.
Next, divide the white paint up into small containers (A muffin pan works GREAT, but small bowls or cups work just fine!).
Finally, add several drops of food coloring to make each color of paint. You can get creative and mix your colors! Stir each container of paint until the color is fully incorporated and even.
You are ready to paint outside!
You can use a paintbrush, sponges, or old rags/t-shirts to apply this paint. You can use this on any concrete surface to add vibrant, colorful artwork to your driveway or patio! ***This can also work as a regular paint on paper, although it may not be a permanent effect, since it leaves a chalky residue. Feel free to experiment!
2. BUBBLE ART! Here’s another way you can create a beautiful, unique work of art without any real paint or brushes! If you have food coloring and bottles of bubbles/bubble wands handy, this is perfect! This does get messy, though, so take it outside in the sunshine!
Materials:
Bubbles/bubble wand
(bubble solution can also be made with a small amount of dish soap and water!)
food coloring
Paper
Containers or a muffin pan
-pour bubble solution into each container (one container per color)
-4-5 drops of food coloring in each container
-stir with bubble wand
-lay paper flat on grass or concrete
-choose a color, dip bubble wand, and blow the colorful bubbles onto your paper! (if it is windy, you may need to hold your paper so that the bubbles actually land on it!) You will notice that the colorful bubbles leave equally colorful circles as they pop on your paper!
3. Scavenger hunt and texture exploration! TEXTURE is how a surface FEELS. It is one of the Elements of Art that we have studied in the art studio at school. My challenge to you is to collect objects that have different textures in your own backyard/neighborhood! Some ideas are: Leaves, rocks, twigs/branches, grass, seeds, shells, bark, feathers.
TEXTURE CHALLENGE: Google “Land Art” and the artist Andy Goldsworthy. He creates what is called Land Art with found objects in Nature. See if you can create art with your found textured objects! Use his work as your inspiration!
I hope these ideas help in some small way, and if you have any questions, suggestions, or would like to share something you’ve made, PLEASE don’t hesitate to reach out! I look forward to seeing what you create this week!
Have a great week, Lions! Stay healthy, and keep creating!
