April News
During National Library Week, April 8-14, I was able to pass some love back by putting goodies in the school mailboxes during the week. Simple gifts of stickers, pins, a paperback book, pencils, and erasers should have brightened your day. It's always nice to find treats in your mailbox. These can always be regifted to the students or used in prize boxes. And a new book is nice to add to the classroom library or teacher collection especially at the end of the school year when the other books have been read a number of times and are starting to look a little worse for the wear.
Pre-K and Kindergarten will finish the year with an Eric Carle author study. First graders have been hearing tooth stories and tooth fairy stories including the comparison of our American tooth fairy to the Mexican version where a mouse gathers the teeth. Second graders have been hearing fairy tales and various versions of this genre. They have been making connections to fairy tale characters that are found in other stories as well as hearing "fractured" fairy tales that have a different twist. Third graders just finished learning about the Dewey Decimal system and how to locate books in the library. Now they will finish the year with a few fables. Fourth and Fifth grade classes continue to explore fables with many lessons involving retelling, making fable foldables, and a Plickers review.
During the month a group of second graders met for a Magic Tree House book club and created paper trees that are being showcased in the display case. The leaves contain information about the book such as title, author, illustrator, series, characters, setting, plot, and resolution.

Grandaddy's Turn
San Antonio Bar Association
Students in 5th grade were treated to a guest reader from the San Antonio Bar Association during Law Week. They heard "Grandaddy's Turn" on how Blacks did not have the right to vote, but when the opportunity arose it was a special occasion. Granddaddy couldn't be prouder of this moment. Based on a true story of growing up in the segregated South. It was a touching story and the kids had some important questions to ask after the reading.
