More than preparing for a test...
As educators, we know that the ISTEP and upcoming ILEARN are a fact of life, and we must do what we can to prepare our students for the format, types of questions, and certainly the skills that are tested.
But wouldn’t it be great to stress less about the tests, and focus on real learning?
At the SIEC, we’re doing just that. We have designed a series of workshops at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels called “Striving for Excellence: ELA ISTEP+ 2017. During these workshops, we begin by analyzing the “Critical” and “Important” standards (most likely to be tested). We unwrap these standards, and look at how they will most likely be presented on the tests.
We do more than that, though. We also spend some time on educational neuroscience, and how to deepen learning and understanding with the strategies and concepts that will impact instruction and learning throughout the year, ensuring greater success for students on the test AND with their overall education.
The SIEC is offering these workshops at the center in December and additional opportunities to prepare for the new ILEARN test in April of 2018. We are also available for onsite training at your school. Contact Julie Monetta or DeAnne Taggart for more information. ~Julie

Indiana Region 4 Migrant Education Center
Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow: Building Momentum in Migrant Education
Our IN Region 4 migrant team continues to actively serve our students during this fall and winter time. We are also busy planning for next spring and summer with curriculum including growth mindset, career choice, and brain research activities.
Tutoring services continue in three school corporations with the number of students served almost doubling this year over those we were able to serve during the previous school year. These teachers work diligently with the students to grow skills and increase performance in many academic areas.
As we receive information from schools regarding new students, our recruiter Alex meets with the families to determine eligibility for program services. Even though this is a slower time for family movement, we do have some new qualifying families in our region.
In working with our families, we have developed a Parent Advisory Council (PAC) both within the Region 4 community and with a State PAC. We held a regional PAC meeting in late October with our highest attendance yet. We gathered many ideas from parents while sharing student successes and updates for the program.
We had visitors from the Ohio and Michigan migrant programs to learn more about the ways we meet the needs of our students from preschool through the older out-of-school (OSY) age groups. We toured several of our summer school sites and were able to network and gain strategies from each other during this visit which will allow both programs to grow. ~Debbie
