Notes from the Principal
Dear West Family,
Wow! What a week at West!
This week we had an amazing visit from author Erin Soderberg. Ms. Soderburg talked about her many books, her love for reading and how she comes up with ideas to write. Our upper elementary students had a great time being entertained by her. A huge thank you to Mrs. Lukaart and her librarian team for organizing this opportunity.
West also experienced the “Big Idea” assembly on Friday. The “Big Idea” promotes character development and has become a part of our conversations and values within the walls of West. Thank you to Mrs. Heyboer for coordinating this event.
Reminders:
Please make sure to read through the newsletter for all of the important information going on at West. Below are a couple key notes-
Hand to Hand:
If you are in need of some extra meals for your child over the weekend, please contact our School Social Worker, Mrs. Maher.
Help During Thanksgiving:
If you are looking for some help with food during the upcoming holidays, please reach out to Mrs. Maher or myself.
Hearing and Vision:

The weather is definitely changing next week. Please remind your child to wear the appropriate attire to school, so they can go outside for recess. “Dress for the Weather” information below.
Lost and Found:
We already have a number of items in our lost and found, please make sure your child is checking to see if they are missing anything. If you would like to come into school and check please feel free.We will gather all up and donate over Thanksgiving break.
Have a great weekend!

Attendance
Student Absences
Just a reminder if your student is absent please email westoffice@nvps.net or call 616.361.3470 the day of the absence.
Student Tardy
Students are marked tardy if they arrive to class after the 8:15 bell. Please make sure to sign them in on the Chromebook located in our lobby if you drop off students after this time.
*If your student is attending an appointment of any kind please provide us with a doctor's note.
We are now at the point where truancy/attendance letters have begun being sent out and want to make sure we are working together to have your student in school as often as possible. Please know that this reporting it mandatory by the state of Michigan and is something we have to do.
Nurse's Corner
- Please remember that you cannot send medicine to school with a student, regardless of it is OTC or prescription. A Northview permission form for medication at school must be filled out before office staff can give it to the student.
- A fever is a temperature greater than 100.4F (according to the CDC). Do not send your child to school for 24 hours after the fever has broken and without the use of fever-reducing medication. A low grade fever is 99.0 - 100.3F. If your child is not feeling well enough to attend school, please keep them home.
- Although lice is not a communicable disease, it can be a nuance. As a parent, it is your responsibility to check and remove lice and nits from your child's hair. Please click here for the KCHD fact sheet.
- For the younger children, it is a great idea to keep an extra pair of underwear and pants in a ziploc bag in the bottom of their backpack (accidents happen).
- Continue to practice good hand and cough hygiene with your children.

Winter 1 BASE Classes
**Special BASE Notes**
BASE Transportation ALERT: Due to staffing within our transportation department, we are no longer able to offer transportation for the BASE program. Please arrange for your child to be picked up at the time of their class dismissal.
Special circumstances: If your child has any special needs or dietary concerns please be sure to let your building coordinator know as soon as you register so any necessary arrangement can be made.
DHHS students please use this link to request an interpreter.
Photographing students: We will use pictures of registrants in our publications. If you prefer your student is not photographed, please email jvanslooten@nvps.net with that request prior to your child's class starting.
Late Pick-ups Policy: Thank you for your promptness in picking up your child at the time their class concludes. When late pick ups occur it can be difficult for our coordinators and instructors to stay late. For this reason we have had to instill the following policy for late pick ups.
- One late pick up - Students will receive a "pass"....We realize parents have busy lives and may run late from time to time.
- Two late pickups - Removal from the class roster. Students may sign up for another session later in the year.
