February

Message from Mrs. Hawkins

Lincoln Families and Friends,

We celebrated the end of first semester with a skating party on January 18th at Morehouse Park. Thanks to the Lincoln Phy Ed Department for organizing this winter experience. Keeping kids active during our MN winter can be challenging, but worth the effort. We will continue to play outside for recess when the temperatures are above zero degrees. Thanks for sending students with the appropriate winter clothing.

Speaking about Minnesota winters, this one looks like it’s going to continue for a while. The winter weather results in more vehicles in the parking lot for drop off and pick up. I appreciate your patience as you navigate the traffic. Here are a couple reminders to keep the traffic running smoothly.

  • Because it is so congested as you enter the parking lot on the west side, drive as far to the east as possible (toward the flagpole). All students, including kindergarten and first graders can enter the main doors and walk to their classrooms from there.

  • Students should only exit the vehicle when it is parked in the drop off lane next to the sidewalk.

  • Do not leave your vehicle unattended in the drop off lane.

  • If you want to avoid the traffic in the lot, consider dropping your student off in the soccer field parking lot. There is a sidewalk from the pavilion to the school and it is plowed all winter.

  • If you are dropping off or picking up on Truman, please stay to the south of the bus area. There is another sidewalk from 14th St. to the school and it is also plowed in the winter.

  • Please avoid parking on the west side of Truman and trying to cross the street between buses.

  • Also, we use the south side of Havana for staff parking. Please don’t fill these spots in the morning.

I am excited for the second semester of the 2022-23 school year. Students and staff are working hard and I know they are going to do amazing things this year. Thank you for supporting them!

I Love to Read

February is I Love to Read Month and our theme this year is Mario Kart. Some highlights for the month will include: dress up days, race track in the library to track reading minutes for each grade level, prizes for students, and an all school PTO book give away at the end of the month.

Science Fair

Your child has the opportunity to prepare and display a science project at the Lincoln School Science Fair that will be held on Thursday, March 9th. A Science Fair project is a great learning experience. It gives students the chance to think and work independently, develop/define individual science interests, and engage in critical thinking. It is also an excellent opportunity for students to learn and understand the scientific process.

This science fair project is one that will be worked on at home where students may work individually or in a group of two or three. We encourage everyone to participate no matter how large or small the project may be. The important element is to have fun and to learn at the same time! Each entry will be judged on Thursday, March 9th. All participants will be acknowledged for their effort. All students will receive ribbons. Purple ribbons will be awarded to students in grades 3, 4 and 5 who will advance to the regional competition at Minnesota State University, Mankato in April.

In order for us to be able to plan accordingly for the science fair, we ask that you please fill out the registration form by Friday, February 10th. After submitting your registration, please stop by the office and pick up your science fair journal. Science fair boards ($3.50) and headers ($1.50) will also be available to purchase in the office. Information for parent viewing will be sent out once we have all the projects signed up.
