Band Commitment forms for the 2016/2017 school year have been passed out in band class. Please return forms by Friday, January 29th. The forms will be collected in class and presented to the guidance office. These forms will allow our guidance counselors to place students in correct related art classes.

The beginning band sign-up process will continue in February. This is for the 2016/2017 school year beginning band. Information night for parents of next school year’s beginning band will occur on Thursday, February 11th at 5:30 or 7:00 PM. If this night is unavailable, you may attend the East sign-up night on Tuesday, February 9th at 5:30 or 7:00 PM. The same information will be present at all four sessions and you may attend any session. This information includes class expectations and information on how to obtain band and orchestra instruments.

Yearbook picture day for music ensembles and clubs is Tuesday, February 3rd. Students should bring or wear their band uniform to school for yearbook pictures. Band pictures will be taken by class throughout day. Students will be given time to change into and out of band uniform.

ISSMA Results--January 30, 2016

Again this year, as in years past, the Franklin Township Middle School West Band was well represented at the Indiana State School Music Association District Solo and Ensemble Competition. The FTMS West Band sent Thirty-two events ranging from soloists and small ensembles to large percussion ensembles. Twenty-Nine events received a gold rating and three received a silver rating (all three receiving a silver rating missed a gold rating by one point or less).

This year's medal count for the FTMS West Band includes seventy-five gold medals and six silver medals.

Three soloists received perfect scores (names to be released pending permission) and the large sixth grade percussion (bucket) ensemble received a perfect score.

Parents of 8th graders and students new to our township had vision screens conducted back in November. There was an unfortunate delay with the Marion County Health Department in getting those results back to our school. If your student failed the screen, you should have received a letter in the mail from the health department. If this is the case, please follow the instructions indicated in that letter as it may be necessary to have your child tested by a physician. If corrective lenses are indicated and there is a financial need, please contact the clinic or your child’s guidance counselor to see if they qualify for assistance in purchasing the needed glasses.

CREATING POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS (CPR)

Creating Positive Relationships (CPR) is preparing to be in your child's school in 2016. As part of that preparation we have created an opportunity for you to learn about our organization and the curriculum your children will be learning in CPR. Our goal is to support you as parents as you help your child navigate the changes that occur physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially during puberty.

On March 29 from 7-7:50 we will be hosting a live webinar for 5th grade parents. And then from 8-9:20 pm we will be hosting a live webinar for our 6th-8th grade parents. All you need to do is register at: https://www.cpr4teens.org/parents/webinar-info/.

We know parents are busy and we hope this new format will allow you to join us in the comfort and convenience of your own home. We also trust that you will find us to be a resource as you work to develop a healthy relationship with your pre-teen. This webinar will equip you with ideas, skills, and direction for opening up communication with your child.

There are also pre-recorded webinars online if you are unable to make the live webinar. However, they will not show the video due to copyright laws. If parents are interested in viewing the video's they can call our office at 317-846-0386 to schedule a viewing time.

Harry Potter Day, West's first annual literacy celebration, was a success. Students and staff appeared for class in the guise of their favorite fantasy characters. Students searched the halls and common areas for Golden Snitches and Horcruxes representing concepts they've learned this year. Mrs. Warner presided over the restricted area of the library, tallying points and helping students with a Dewey Decimal scavenger hunt. In the end, 7th grade was victorious in the total points battle and earned an Electronic Day. However, 6th grader Lucas Paz claimed the prize for best Fan Art piece, and 8th grader Jamie Barger's original story won top honors in the Fan Fiction category. Thank you to everyone who participated, planned, prepared, and helped make this day run so smoothly.
