Week of January 18

I hope you have all kept warm this past week! I am grateful that it has warmed up and our students can be outside in this fresh air.

In math, our third graders have started learning about fractions. Naming fractions came quite easily for many of them. Now, we've moved on to some more challenging ideas: finding fractions of a whole number, finding fractions of an hour, and equivalent fractions. We will continue to build on these concepts throughout the next week.

In literacy, we are focusing on recognizing the theme (what is the lesson or big idea the author wants us to learn) of a text. This past week, the students had one of their reading responses graded for the first time. You may have seen a rubric come home with their score and feedback on it. We will be doing this every couple of weeks.

iPads, iPads, iPads

Starting next Tuesday, your child will be bringing their iPad home. At this point, the iPads will only be sent home on Tuesdays. The students will have an assignment to complete that night and it is to be returned the next day. In preparation for this, we have had several lessons on what it looks like to be a good digital citizen. Today, I am sending home "3rd Grade iPad Guidelines." Please review these with your child.

At conferences, we will discuss how this process is going and you may opt for your child NOT to bring their iPad home.

FOREST HILLS READ-A-THON

The annual Forest Hills Read-a-Thon starts today, Friday, Jan. 8. Get ready for a month of fun reading-related events and activities! Watch for information packets coming home in backpacks. Read-a-Thon will be different this year, so please read your packet carefully.

Mark your calendar for Family Reading Night on January 22, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Forest Hills. This free family event features the Book Swap (bring 3 gently used books, choose 3 “new to you” books), a visit from author Catherine Friend, teacher readers, reading with therapy dogs, a yummy for-purchase taco bar, and more!

Also—all month when you order Papa John’s pizza from any Twin Cities location, using code FORESTHILLS, get back 20% for yourself and Papa John’s gives 20% to our Read-a-Thon, for classroom libraries and the Secret Library!

We invite your questions and feedback. If you are interested in learning more about the PTO or volunteering, visit the PTO website or contact PTO Co-Presidents Jill Schumacher and Karin Khuhro at foresthillsparents@gmail.com.
