Parent Teacher Conferences
Conferences are scheduled for November 17-20. I will be sending home a flyer with sign-up information this week.
This "portfolio presentation" will be a student-led conference, which is NOT a traditional parent/teacher conference. Your child will lead the first part of the conference to present his or her accomplishments and goals. After your child’s presentation, parents and teachers may use the remaining time to discuss strengths, concerns, issues, and academics. This format provides an opportunity for your child to…
- Share samples of work
- Learn self-evaluation
- Be accountable for his/her work
- Communicate with you about his/her progress and goals.
CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR YOUR 25 MINUTE TIME SLOT. ** Your child needs to attend this conference.

What Are We Learning?
Math
Since our last Jones Journal, we have been learning about multiplying fractions. Before we learned the "shortcut," we took some time to really explore what it means to multiply a fraction. Students realized that 1/2 x 3/4 is really saying, "What is 1/2 OF 3/4." So, they learned that we are finding a fraction of a fraction, when we multiply fractions. Students will continue to multiply a fraction by a whole number AND multiply a fraction by a fraction.
- 2/3 x 6
- 3/5 x 4/7
- 1 3/4 x 4 4/5
Social Studies
A few weeks ago, Mr. Jones received a very strange email from a "Dr. Pete Mitchell" that explained the possibility of a zombie outbreak in the USA. Students were asked to help "Dr. Mitchell" research somewhere else in the western hemisphere that the citizens of Ohio could escape the zombies. Students were assigned small groups to research different countries in North or South America. You can visit the link below to read more about this really cool project.
This project allows students to:
- Identify and describe regions within the Western Hemisphere using criteria related to landform, climate, population and levels of income.
- Explain how variations among physical environments in the Western Hemisphere influence human activities. Explain how human activities have altered the physical environments of the Western Hemisphere.
- Form an opinion and use evidence to support it.
- Globes and other geographic tools can be used to gather, process and report information about people, places and environments.
- Latitude and longitude can be used to make observations about location and generalizations about climate.
- Regions can be determined using various criteria (e.g. landform, climate, population, cultural or economic)
