2014 Teen Summer Reading Program
at Nahant Public Library
Spark a Reaction!
Welcome to NPL's Teen Summer Reading Program
In 2013, Nahant Public Library ran its first summer reading program specifically for teens! Teens who signed up received a free book from the "Groundbreaking Reads" list and got notifications about programs, like book trailer boot camp and a pizza party. At the end of the summer, two teens won movie passes and book store gift cards! This year, we're hoping to get even more Nahant teens involved!
For 2014, we want to reward all teens for reading and we want all teens to take part!
The theme for this year's summer reading program is... Spark a Reaction!
About the Program
What is it?
The summer reading program is aimed to connect teens ages 12 to 18 with other teens at the Nahant Public Library. This summer's program includes reading and submitting book reviews to win prizes, a recommended list of books with "spark," and teen-only library events throughout the summer! At the end of the summer, there will be a party for teens to gather and chat books. The program will run from July 7th to August 21st.
How can I get involved?
The summer reading programs kick-off on Monday, July 7th. Come into the library and sign up at the teen table. We'll give you a flyer with the link for reviewing, a list of summer events and recommended "Spark a Reaction!" titles. We hope to have many of those titles on display, but anything we don't have may be reserved via Interlibrary Loan. From there, all you have to do is read, review, and attend programs that interest you!
How do I win prizes?
For each book you read, submit a review at the link in blue below. You may count anything you read between the end of school and the end of summer reading. If you give permission, your review will be posted on a blog to serve as a recommendation for other teens. Your first review earns you a voucher for a free Chipotle burrito and a double entry into the monthly prize package. Thereafter, for each book you read, you will earn another chance to win the monthly prize. The more you read, the more chances to win! There will also be programs throughout the summer. See the event listings below to find out more about the programs. Attending a program earns you double prize entries!
What is "Spark a Reaction"?
Each year, a theme for public library summer reading programs is chosen at the national level, with subthemes for adults, teens and kids. "Spark a Reaction!" is the teen theme that encompasses science and technology-based books as well as just about any book worth talking about! When you write your book review, you will want to consider whether your book in some way sparks a reaction, and who the book may appeal to.

Accessing the Online Catalog
This will be our first summer with access to MassCat, the new Nahant online catalog! This means it will be easier than ever to explore the collection online, request books and manage your library account. Please note that if you have not updated your account from the paper cards we were using prior to automation, you will need to visit the library to do so before you can access MassCat. The link to the online catalog is here.
