Mitosis by Pipe Cleaners
SiTong Shu
Somatic skin cell with diploid number of 6 (G1 of Interphase)
3 maternal chromosomes, 3 paternal chromosomes, 6 total chromosomes, 3 homologous pairs of chromosomes.
A real human skin cell would have 46 chromosomes.
Pipe cleaners are inaccurate because chromosomes do not condense until prophase of mitosis so during G1, they are still in the form of loose chromatin strands.
S of Interphase
3 maternal chromosomes, 3 paternal chromosomes, 6 total chromosomes, 3 homologous pairs of chromosomes.
12 sister chromatids.
Karyotype
Damage on maternal chromosome #2.
Telophase and Cytokinesis
6 chromosomes in each cell.
2 daughter cells will have damaged DNA.
Damage to a chromosome may cause a mutation that could lead to disorders or diseases later in life.
Mutation will be passed to the next generation because the damaged DNA will continue replicating through mitosis and will be present in new daughter cells.
