Hertzog Headlines
recent happenings in 4th grade - Week of October 5 - 9
Literacy
This week in ELA we continued working on personal narratives and using context clues to help us with words we don't know. Lessons included:
- Show NOT tell
- Synonyms and Antonyms
- Dialog and quotation marks
- Determining meaning of multiple meaning words using context clues
Math
This week continued practicing multiplying up to four digit numbers by a one digit number. We also began learning about how to multiply two 2-digit numbers. We have not yet introduced the "standard" algorithm on this so your child may be doing it differently than you do. Please allow this for now, we will learn the standard way soon! Here is a video modeling if you would like to help your child practice.
PLEASE continue to practice fact fluency of multiplication up to 12 x 12 at home. This should be an almost daily task. There are many resources online and good old fashioned flash cards work great too!
Science
We continued our unit this week on Scientific Practices and the Scientific Method. We focused on hypotheses and variables. We will get to perform a popper experiment next week!
Please continue to talk with your child about the importance of doing the right thing even when they think no one is looking and even when others are not doing the right thing.
Conferences
Please remember to Pick-A-Time for this year's Parent/Teacher Conferences. The web address is https://pickatime.com/client?ven=11610650 and links are located on the PVE website. Students brought home a letter last week to share the process of scheduling your conferences this fall. An example letter is attached - your student's will have their specific name and password to be used in the upper right hand corner. If you have questions, please contact the office at 986-2284.
