Coast to Coast
Great Lakes Chapter - Society for Public Health Education
Spring 2017
Dear GLC-SOPHE Members,
I hope you are doing well and enjoying the beginning of spring! While we’ve had a few cloudy days, I know the bits of sun and warmer weather have me feeling more energized and motivated to be active lately.
Right around the corner, GLC-SOPHE members will have an opportunity to build on the momentum that spring brings to Michigan with our upcoming summer meeting! This year’s meeting, “Inclusivity in Practice: Addressing Microaggressions,” will be held on May 5th at Crystal Mountain. SOPHE’s Code of Ethics for the Health Education Profession references the principles of promoting social justice and the active promotion of good. They emphasize the importance of cross-cultural approaches to health education and the responsibility of health educators to be sensitive to social and cultural diversity. At this year’s session, Grand Valley State University faculty Alisha Davis and Claudia Leiras will lead us through an interactive workshop to explore the influences we all have at the interpersonal and organizational levels. The e-board has been working hard to plan this event, and we truly hope to see you there as we learn together. The day will end with a membership meeting, where we hope to hear from you about how GLC-SOPHE can best meet your needs! Visit the Eventbrite page to register.
During our summer meeting, we will announce this year’s recognition awards. You still have time to nominate someone!
Related to the topic of inclusivity, it is our goal to continue to expand GLC-SOPHE’s membership to include practitioners from settings who may not have engaged with us before. Involving individuals from a wide array of agencies will enable GLC-SOPHE to continue to address the needs of Michigan’s health promotion workforce by serving as a networking resource. Who do you know who would enjoy being involved in GLC-SOPHE? Share membership information with them today!
Lastly, I would like to express thanks to Lindsey Pung-Terry, our webmaster, who transitioned us to a new website platform this spring. Be sure to check out the new look-and-feel!
Best,
Phoebe Goldberg

SOPHE’s 68th Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado did not disappoint! This year’s meeting, held March 29th – April 1st, invited participants to take a leap and engage with health education and promotion colleagues to scale new heights, bridge silos, and build relationships to promote health for all. There was over 280 scientific presentations and posters with cutting-edge health education research, policy, and practice on display.
Over two and a half days, conference attendees were able to identify skills and resources needed to be effective leaders in our dynamic field of health education and health promotion, and determine strategies to align stakeholders to improve population health. Presentations covered collaborative partnerships and how to increase access to health initiatives developed through evidence-based practice.
Participants were invited to explore innovative techniques using emerging technologies to meet the needs of an increasingly global environment and enhance program planning and evaluation in health communications. Multiple discussion surrounded issues of how to meet the needs of priority populations, partners, and stakeholders by engaging in policy advocacy efforts related to social determinants of health to advance health equity.
One of my favorite sessions addressed the challenges unique to children, adolescents, and young adults by determining best practices, systems, and health policies that improve health literacy and health behaviors for a lifetime.
NCHEC, the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, brought all CHES and MCHES credentialed professionals together for a breakfast to discuss the new changes coming to the CHES/MCHES exam and continuing education credits. NCHEC also videotaped multiple interviews with many attendees (including myself!) to host on their social media channels to promote CHES/MCHES to all health education professionals. It was a great experience and we will be sure to share on our GLC-SOPHE social media platforms!
Attending my first House of Delegates meeting, I was able to interact and network with chapters from Florida, Ohio, Indiana, California, and more. I am excited to bring back new ideas and energy to our Great Lakes Chapter and am already looking forward to 2018 in Columbus, Ohio!
