Summer PD Extravaganza!
Mathematics Offerings - June through August
June 8th AM Session
This session for middle school math teachers will address best practices and uses of the our mathematics textbook series. In addition we will discuss how the text materials will align with curriculum for 2015-2016.
June 8th PM Session
Fostering Writing in Math for 6th-12th - pm 1:00-4:00
Integrating writing with mathematical concepts is essential. It promotes ownership, teaches the value of multiple approaches, contributes to equity, and helps students increase understanding. In this session you will learn many different writing activities that can be used enhance learning in mathematics. This session features the incorporation of an NCTM E-Seminar and will also include ideas for getting students blogging about math to enhance writing skills.
June 9th
Formative assessment allows an opportunity for teachers to determine what students know so far about a concept or topic. Synonymous with “assessment for learning”, these checks occur as an incorporated and integral part of the instructional process to inform how the teacher will need to instruct next in the cycle. This session features the book Mathematics Formative Assessment: 75 Practical Strategies for Linking Assessment, Instruction, and Learning. Teachers attending will get a hands on look at how to create brief tasks that help to check for student understanding and guide instructional planning. Each campus will also receive sets of the featured book so that teachers can reference it once back on campus.
June 10th
In this hands on session led by associates of Debbie Diller, author of Math Work Stations, teachers will learn to set up their classroom space efficiently and effectively in order to teach with math work stations that connect to whole group and small group instruction and tie to state standards. Included are practical suggestions for establishing, managing, and using math work stations in K-3. They will also help teachers learn how to organize math materials so they can use hands-on methods (with all those manipulatives) more effectively! An emphasis on academic vocabulary and increasing students' "math talk" is included.
June 11th AM Sessions
Using Open Numbers Lines K-5th 8:30-9:55
Open number lines can be a valuable alternative strategy for kids on many topics in math. Come and learn from our fellow teachers who are using the open number lines about ways to make this resource a valued part of your instruction. We will move through stations so you can see several ideas and plan for how to organize your materials to make best use of them in your room. Don't miss out on this hands on session!
Fostering Math Talk through Classroom Discussions K-6th 10:05-11:30
In order for students to better understand mathematical concepts through problem solving and reasoning they need effective practice and time to develop a “conversation” with others about their mathematical thinking. One of the most important instructional tools we can provide for our students is the opportunity to “talk” out loud about how they solve mathematical problems. This session focuses on how to develop student skills for process thinking and mathematical communication.
June 11th PM Sessions
Building Math Vocabulary Make and Take K-8th 1:00-2:25
This session will be lead by district teachers who were part of the Texas Regional Math Collaborative for the 14-15 school year. During this time they will share great ideas and strategies they learned after attending over 100 hours of professional development each. Hands on materials and active engagement strategies will be included to help make your classroom a place where kids want to come and learn
July 15th
Problem Based Learning involves the opportunity to engage learning through a rich application from the very beginning of instruction. Like Project-Based Learning, students want to see how mathematics applies to the greater world around them and have meaning to learn the content. During this session teachers will work collaboratively to create and plan for rich problems to ignite learning in the classroom.
Investigations Make and Take Sessions
Investigations teaching involves lots of materials, activities, and games. Often these materials require preparation up front. In addition, some supplemental activity ideas are often needed to be sure we cover all of the TEKS. These make and take sessions will focus on a single unit and provide an opportunity to make and take all the materials needed for teaching that one unit in Investigations.
Unit 1 K-2 Session July 16 8:30-11:30
Unit 1 3-5 Session July 16 1:00-4:00
Unit 2 K-2 Session July 27 8:30-11:30
Unit 2 3-5 Session July 27 1:00-4:00
July 23rd
This session will help teachers build their own graphing calculator knowledge so they can help students use calculator features during instruction and for assessment. Session focus is on Intermediate use. As long as you have some basic knowledge of how to turn on/off the calculator and do a few things, then this session is right for you.
Graphing Calculators in 8-12 Mathematics - Advanced Users PM 1:00-4:00
This session is for the grade 8 and high school teachers take their use of the graphing calculator to the next level. Advanced functions and features will be showcased.
August 10th
TERC Investigations is the foundation for the elementary math curriculum in LEISD. The approach used embeds numeracy strategies with a math workshop model to develop students as mathematical thinkers and problem solvers. This session will allow teachers to understand the frameworks of Investigations, dive deeper into the first unit, and to better understand and create materials for the Math Workshop time incorporated into instruction.
This session is required for all teachers new to LEISD Investigations, or those who missed training in summer 2014.August 11th
Workshop Model is a way of differentiating instruction in mathematics, reading, and writing so that all students get what they need in the learning process. Workshop allows for student based instruction in small group workstations while the teacher works with a small group at a time. This can be contrasted with the traditional delivery of information to a whole class setting at one time. Student needs are better served in the workshop model and this approach can be implemented in any grade level
This session is required for all teachers new to K-5 Math and ELAR in LEISD for the 2015-16 school year.
August 12th
New mathematics TEKS will be implemented in the high school courses in the 2015-16 school year. As a result new textbook resources were adopted for use by LEISD. This session will provide an overview of the selected materials and ways to use them effectively for instruction in the high school mathematics classrooms. Algebra I through PreCalculus included.
This session is required for teachers of high school mathematics courses.Planning for New TEKS and New Texts PM 1:00-4:00
This afternoon session will continue learning from the morning for high school teachers and will be a time for gaining a deeper understanding of how the TEKS have changed and planning for effective instruction using the new adopted text materials and resources.
August 13th Focus on the Process Skills
The process skills strand of the TEKS expect that students can apply mathematics to the world around them, problem solve, evaluate, reason, use a variety of tools and strategies, communicate through language and representation, analyze relationships, and use proof to justify understanding. But how do you foster these skills? The following 4 sessions will focus on different areas of these process skills and provide teachers with strategies and ideas to support the process skills in their content.
8:30-9:55 Fostering Communication in the Math Classroom
10:05-11:30 Using Representations in the Math Classroom
1:00-2:25 Fostering Problem Solving in the Math Classroom
2:35-4:00 Promoting Reasoning and Proof in the Math Classroom
