Stop Motion Animation Short

Pre-Production Rubric

Steps 1-7 are Pre-Production Stages and your participation in each stage combined for the Pre-Production grade.


Step 1: In Teams Research/investigate Paper Cutout Animation and Legomation ( - brickfilms) production techniques.


Step 2: In Teams Choose your maker style along with your movie topic. Topic choices are:


  • Cyberbullying
  • Online Safety
  • Computer History


Step 3: With team talk about and complete/share the Strategy (team participation and expectations)


Step 4: With team brainstorm story ideas based on chosen topic


Step 5: Determine specifics (sheets in class - PDF in Google Classroom)


  • The Story (Beginning / Middle / End)
  • Characters
  • Setting


Step 6: Storyboard - everyone do your part - think about everything -- characters (clay colors or paper colors), settings, action, props, music, dialog. Plan each still photo setup and additions to add when uploaded to movie making software (iMovie or MovieMaker)


Step 7: Create set and characters based on storyboard .This is a maker production, everything is to be created using your maker style choice - legos or paper.

Production Rubric

Your participation in research/harvesting sounds, music, elements and objects needed for filming, filming, and completing animated short using software (iMovie or Movie Maker) is combined for total Production grade.



Follow team created storyboard to guide/film short using digital camera - saving images to SD card. Images will be transferred to iMovie or Movie Maker to create the final PSA production.




Elements to include in your finished production using iMovie or Movie Maker:

  • An introduction for your short with title
  • Character created by hand clay or paper depending on maker style
  • Action/movement for stop-motion effect
  • Dialog / music
  • Closing with team member names and citations/credit for music etc.
  • Completed movie file turned in through Google Classroom assignment post
