Kingsley Connection

A weekly newsletter from the Kingsley Administrative Team...

October 3rd

Dear Kingsley Families,

We successfully conducted our practice fire drill Friday afternoon. Students and staff did a great job getting out quickly and safely. We will hold our fire drill in partnership with the Downers Grove Fire Department on Thursday, October 21st.

We hope to see everyone join us at next week's National Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 6th and don't forget Tuesday is Picture Day!

Have a great weekend,

Mel Hackett & Eleni Gajewski

National Walk to School Day! Wednesday, October 6th

ALL families are invited to join us on Wednesday, October 6th! We will meet in the Divine Savior Church parking lot at 7:45 a.m. Students are encouraged to wear orange to go with our theme for the year of SPARK HAPPINESS! Let's show how happy we are to be able to be together. We will depart Divine Savior Church at 7:50 a.m. and head north on Saratoga, west on Palmer, and north on Powell. We will take a group photo before we depart. See you there!

Student Leadership in Action...

Kingsley Safety Patrol kicked off this week! These students play a vital leadership role at our school. One example of safety patrol is supporting primary students at recess. Safety patrol students lead games and help the primary students follow expected behaviors. Safety patrol students pictured below facilitated a game of Duck, Duck, Goose! This has become a big hit during recess!

Arrival & Dismissal Reminders

Here are a few reminders to help keep our students safe during our arrival and dismissal routines:

  • Please do not do a U-Turn while in the car line on Norfolk Avenue
  • Parking lots in the front and back should not be used for pick up or drop off (unless arranged by the school). If families need to park, please use Powell (north of Norfolk) or Barrett (north of Norfolk)
  • Remain in your car in the car line. If you have to get out of your car to get your child in the driver's side of the vehicle, please use the parking zones designated on Powell or Barrett (both north of Norfolk) and cross with a crossing guard

Medical Concerns

If your child has an injury of any kind, please contact the health office. Your child's teacher may not always have time to relay messages in the morning. This includes twisted ankles, allergies, etc.

COVID Test To Stay Update

Voluntary COVID Testing Program Sign-up

District 58 encourages families to consider signing up for free PCR COVID-19 testing for District 58 students. Registration for this optional testing program is open and our program is actively underway.

Families can select from any or all of three types of testing services including:

  1. Weekly screening testing (routine testing)

  2. Symptomatic testing (testing when a student or staff member develops symptoms at school)

  3. Test-to-Stay (testing for situations in which a student has been identified as a close contact)

Test-to-Stay, an IDPH-endorsed process that allows a close contact to remain in school with regular antigen testing. Please see the district communication regarding the IDPH's guidance regarding when Test-to-Stay can be implemented in schools.

How do we celebrate Halloween at Kingsley?

Halloween will be celebrated at Kingsley School on Friday, October 29th. We are currently planning for a celebration at every grade level that will be led by classroom teachers this year. We are partnering with our Kingsley PTA to prepare an art/craft or game for each class. Students will also participate in our annual Halloween costume parade. It continues to be our practice that no food or candy of any kind will be allowed during classroom or holiday celebrations. Classroom parties will focus on team-building versus foods and sweets. Halloween parade details to follow.

Costume Guidelines (No changes from previous years):

**Students should NOT wear their costumes to school

(with the exception of Kindergarten)**

  1. Costumes should be easy to put on in a few minutes prior to the parade. Students will need to dress themselves in the classroom with little help from adults. No make-up, please.
  2. Costumes should promote healthy attitudes and good taste
  3. No props/accessories that could be construed as a weapon, i.e. toy guns, knives, clubs, spears, bows/arrows, etc.
  4. No costumes that promote excess violence or in any way emphasize the use of guns or knives
  5. No costumes that endorse products inappropriate for children, i.e. cigarettes, alcohol, etc.
  6. No masks (other than COVID-19 required masks) or items that cover the face
  7. Kingsley administration reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of a student's costume
