New Year, More Learning!
National Spanish Exam (PreAP)
Each year, students in the Alamo Heights PreAP Spanish program have the opportunity to compete in the National Spanish Exam through their Spanish class in March/April.
The test fee is $6.00, and is due on Wednesday, January 30. Late registration will be available in February for $8.00.
Participation in the exam itself is voluntary. However, since the knowledge and skills assessed in the competition align with our course expectation, practice and preparation activities and evaluations will be graded, so all students will prepare. Students compete in the appropriate category including Classroom Experience, Outside Experience, and Bilingual. Unfortunately, students who studied Spanish formally in a Spanish speaking country and subsequently moved to the US are not eligible to compete.
Participation in the National Spanish exam shows extra dedication to language study, and provides an opportunity to see how students stand relating to other Spanish students around the country. The exam will be administered during the students’ Spanish class during the week of March 18th to March 22nd.
All students will receive a score report showing performance in 4 areas: Reading, Listening, Grammar and Vocabulary, providing an understanding of areas of strength and areas to improve. It also indicates the overall score and national ranking. Medals are awarded to students in the Oro, Plata and Bronce levels.
Oro - 95th percentile or higher
Plata - 85th percentile or higher
Bronce - 75th percentile or higher
Honor - 50th percentile or higher
Participation
Additionally, the top-scoring Alamo Heights student in each level and category will receive an award from the local chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), the sponsoring organization. The award will be a gift card to a bookstore.
If you have any questions about participation in the National Spanish Exam, do not hesitate to contact me.

Permission slips will be available before departure on Monday for parents to sign.
Movie Night
Library Game Day
Monthly the Spanish classes within the World Language department have a cross-sectional, cross-level, and cross-program Library Game Day. The purpose of this Game Day is to build fluency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the Target Language (Spanish). Having this cross-sectional time allows students to interact not only in a more comfortable environment but with students of various ability as well.
