WHPE February Update
Building Strong Connections: Educate. Engage. Advocate
PyeongChang Winter Olympics, American Heart Month, and Critical Learning Connections
Hello Wisconsin Health and Physical Education Professionals!
We are currently enjoying the 2018 Winter Olympic Games underway in PyeongChang, South Korea, with the Paralympics to follow shortly after! What an amazing opportunity it has been to incorporate the Olympics and Paralympics into meaningful discussions and insightful, fun learning experiences with students.
My only regrets are that there are not enough hours in a teaching day to take in all of the memorable Olympic moments, and I wish I saw my students more each week so that we could talk more often about the daily events, triumphs/defeats, sportsmanship qualities, perseverance, health and skill related fitness skills necessary to perform each sport, mental and physical preparation, growth mindset, and resiliency skills that students have witnessed during the Olympics.
I hope you have been able to capitalize on many of these aspects with your students, and can build on the physical, cognitive and affective health and physical literacy skills that enabled these Olympic and Paralympic athletes to pursue their dreams and quest for excellence. I know my students have been excited to share some of the snow and ice activities they have tried this winter, so I am sure yours have too! Many educators have shared their fabulous Olympic and Paralympic activities on social media, so if you haven't had a chance to highlight them yet, check out FB, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest for some creative activities to share with your students!
February is also American Heart Month, which is another perfect topic to integrate with our JRFH/HFH events and health and physical education class lessons. Check out the resources below that SHAPE America and AHA have provided for educators to use throughout this month with students!
