Information from Mrs. Grosch

Hello Marion Jordan Families,

The countdown is on! The start of the year is just a few short days away and we are READY! The classrooms are nearly set, the lessons are being planned, and the teachers are gearing up! We are about to embark on the new school year with greater confidence than we had at this time last year.

In spite of our confidence and hopeful outlook, we will begin the year with some safety parameters in place. Namely, all staff, students and visitors will wear masks while inside the school. Governor Pritzker, citing increases in positive cases and a steadily rising number of hospitalizations, even among children, announced a mask mandate for all schools, both public and private, in Illinois. The mandate includes anyone, staff, students or visitors, while inside of the school building. At this time, masks need not be worn outdoors.

We will comply with the mandate to help our schools remain open and to ensure safety to our greatest extent for everyone. For now, anyone entering the building will be required to wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status.

It is important to remember how far we have come, as one year ago many students remained at home for virtual learning. We must recognize that although there are varying opinions, success lies in our ability to have all of our students in person working with the amazing Marion Jordan staff. Our children have always looked to the adults in their lives in times of uncertainty, and it is important that we provide a calming presence as we head into this school year. I appreciate your ongoing support.

We are excited to welcome parents to school the evening of Thursday, August 26th for Parent Orientation. Your child's classroom teacher will provide you with an overview of the curriculum and other bits of important information for the year. Please save the date and watch for additional information about this adults only evening.

Warmly,

Jenny Grosch

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

So that you are fully prepared and ready for the first days of school, here is a synopsis of our arrival and dismissal procedures. Our focus during these transitional times of the day has been, and continues to be, on accuracy as well as safety. In time, the systems will become more efficient as well. Thank you for taking a few minutes to watch the attached video that will provide you with a few updates on our procedures. As always, we thank you for your partnership in all we do for your student (s).

If your student takes the bus, he/she will be dropped off on the blue awning side (Harrison Road, East side) of the building. Staff will eagerly greet your student, check thier certification card, and assist them in getting to the right classroom. Upon dismissal, your student will board the buses in this same area. Each bus has a number and color associated with it and your child will quickly learn his/her color and number. While they are learning, adult supervisors are equipped with rosters to look up and verify your child's correct bus. Once the buses are loaded, they will depart from school and be on their way back to you. All students will have assigned seats to assist with contact tracing should that be necessary.

If you drive your student to school, you will drop them off at Door #1, the main entrance to the school by the flagpole. Please come into the school area by driving up Clyde St. (one block east of the school). Clyde circles around to Wilson which joins up with Harrison. As you come up Clyde, you will likely see cars pulled over to the side - this is the line to join! When it is time, the cars will be waved into the parking lot where you will circle around and come to the area in front of Door #1. Please pull as far forward in the line as you can, this helps us to unload multiple cars at one time, thus expediting the wait time for all. Staff will be at this entrance as well to check your child's certification card and assist them to their classrooms. For pick up at the end of the day, follow the same procedure. Staff will be outside with the students waiting for rides and will help to match families after a great day at school. Every family will receive a family name sign - this will have your last name and your child (ren)'s names on it. Please display the name sign in your windshield at pick up to assist our staff in matching families efficiently and accurately.

We work very hard to ensure student safety and accuracy at both arrival and dismissal times. Efficiency will come and we appreciate your patience as we get the process underway.

Pick Up/ Drop Off Tips:

  • The school parking lot is a phone free zone. Kindly refrain from using your cell phone during drop off and pick up.
  • Students should exit and enter cars on the passenger side. Please adjust any booster seats or car seats that may be in the way of your child.
  • Pulling as far forward as you can in front of the building greatly helps with the timing of our arrival/dismissal.
  • Display your family name sign when picking up.
  • Students should be ready to exit the vehicle as you pull up at arrival - shoes on, certification card signed, backpack easily accessible.

Important Back To School COVID Information

We are very much looking forward to welcoming students back to in -person learning in a setting that will more closely resemble a typical school experience. Our goal, of course, is to keep everyone safe. While things related to COVID have improved from last school year, there is still a need to make every effort to keep everyone safe, comfortable, and able to remain in school. We anticipate we may need to adjust, pivot, and respond to things that present, however, here are a few things you can expect to start the year:

  • Students will be seated a minimum of 3 feet apart in the classroom.
  • Masks will be worn by all staff, students, and visitors to the building.
  • Certification cards will be checked as each student arrives to school.
  • Staff will be self -certifying their health each day.
  • We will not be taking temperatures at arrival.
  • Art, Music, and PE will be in their respective areas of the school.
  • Lunch will be served in classrooms.
  • Students will have 40 minutes of outdoor recess time each day, weather permitting.
  • Masks will not be required outdoors.
  • Breakfast will be available for all students as they arrive each day if they wish to partake.
  • Dismissal will not be as staggered as it was last year.
  • Students will have assigned seats, with siblings, on the school bus.
  • Lockers will be used this year.
  • Frequent mask breaks will be taken.
  • SHIELD testing will be done weekly for those who opt IN

Thank an MJ Staff Member

Teachers in general love this time of year. Marion Jordan teachers and staff members take the prospect of beginning a new year to a whole new level. They prepare their classrooms, plan lessons, organize schedules, review student records, and think about all of the possibilities the year ahead holds. As much as we recognize their efforts and successes here at school, nothing means more to a teacher or staff member than a kind word from a student or his/her family. As we get the year underway, I invite you to take notice of the things you see your child's teacher do, hear your child's teacher say, or the things you hear your child gush with excitement about related to their teacher. We've included this simple form for you to submit should you feel so inclined to do so. Children in full day school spend more of their waking day with their teacher than they do with their parents. We thank you for entrusting your child with us and look forward to a great year.

From the Health Office

Hello! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far! With the start of the new school year only a few weeks away, it is time to make sure your child’s health requirements are up to date.

  • All students entering Kindergarten, 2nd and 6th grade require a dental exam.
  • All students new to District 15 will require a current physical exam with all immunizations up to date (Certificate of Child Health Examination), and students new to the State of Illinois, including incoming Kindergarten students, will require an eye examination. This form is available in the school office, online, and here: State of Illinois Eye Examination Report.

  • All students should provide proof of immunizations by October 15, 2021, or the student will be excluded from school. The list of current immunizations can be found on the district website here: IDPH Health Requirements.

  • Students with health conditions such as asthma, epilepsy/seizures, severe allergies, and diabetes require the emergency action plan completed by their physician along with the Medication Administration Forms, signed by the physician and parent, for any medications required at school. Please bring these forms and medications on or before the first day of school. These forms are available in the school office, online, and here

If your child requires any of these health documents and you have not done so already, please kindly make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. If you have any questions regarding the above requirements, you may reach me at thomass2@ccsd15.net I will be back in the office the first week of August to answer any phone calls. At that time, we will also have more specific information to share related to COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions for the upcoming school year. Thank you for your patience. Stay safe and enjoy the rest of your summer!

Picture Day is Coming Up!

Picture Day for Marion Jordan Elementary School is scheduled for Wednesday, September 1, 2021. Ordering information will be shared in the near future.

A note on masks: Inter-State Studio photographers and reps will follow the mask policy in place at your school.

For student pictures, please note we will work with parent volunteers or school employees to ensure each child is ready to have their picture taken and has their mask removed if they feel comfortable. Our photographers may simply ask one time, "Would you like to take off the mask for your portrait?"
