high school newsletter

Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend!

Thank you to all of the families that came to our New Parent Breakfast last Friday! I hope everyone walked away feeling like they have learned more about our school, staff, MSO, and most importantly, that everyone felt welcome and included. We strive to provide a welcoming environment not only to our students, but to their entire family.

Speaking of our families, I hope that everyone who came to Grandparents Day yesterday had a wonderful time! Again, I hope that everyone who attended enjoyed their time with us as much as we enjoyed spending our afternoons with you! Grandparents are very special to all of us and it is one of our favorite events at the school that we hold for our families.

Lastly, Don't forget that we are hosting the STEAM Innovation Awards on October 25, 2019 at the Metropolitan Club in Alpharetta to celebrate the many successes of the school and to honor organizations that support STEAM education in the Atlanta area.

Join us for an evening of excellence in STEAM education.

Have a great week!

With Warmest Regards,

Kenan Sener,

Fulton Science Academy maintains that student attendance is necessary if the student is to benefit fully from the educational experience. Attendance is taken during each class period. Missing 15 minutes or more of any class (either at beginning or end) constitutes an absence.

Students are allowed 10 absences per year for full year (1 credit) high school classes and are allowed 5 absences per semester for semester long (.5 credit) high school classes (with the exception of school sponsored field trips and academic competition). If a student has 10 unexcused absences, he/she will lose credit for that class. For students having 10 excused absences, he/she will go before the Attendance Review Committee to determine if credit is awarded or if any additional requirements must be met.

Alpharetta, GA, September 4, 2019. Mrs. Sema Duzyol, Mathematics Department Chair at Fulton Science Academy Private School in Alpharetta, GA was honored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) with the Edyth May Sliffe Award for distinguished mathematics teaching at the middle and high school levels.

The Edyth May Sliffe Awards for Distinguished Mathematics Teaching in Middle School and High School are given annually to middle and high school mathematics teachers who have done outstanding work to motivate students in mathematics by participating in one of the MAA American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) competitions. This national education award recognizes outstanding work to spark students' interest in mathematics through participation in the MAA AMC.

Annually, approximately 300,000 middle school and high school students in approximately 6,000 schools participate in the MAA American Mathematics Competitions. The mission of the AMC is to increase interest in mathematics and to develop problem-solving skills through participation in a fun event.

“It is my honor to recognize Mrs. Sema Duzyol with an Edyth May Sliffe award for the dedication that she brings to teaching mathematics,” said MAA Executive Director Michael Pearson. “The hours spent preparing students for and organizing MAA American Mathematics Competitions demonstrates her passion for helping the next generation understand the importance of mathematics in shaping our world.”

“I can not think of a more worthy person to deserve this prestigious national award” said Principal Kenan Sener. "Whether it is early morning, evening, or weekend, we always see Mrs. Duzyol at the school instilling her love of Mathematics in her students. Her dedication towards her students is beyond expression! It is the teachers like Mrs. Duzyol that help make Fulton Science Academy the school that we love! What makes this news even more special is that this is the second year in a row Mrs. Duzyol won this prestigious national award."

The Edyth May Sliffe Award was established in 1989 with a bequest from Sliffe’s estate. Chick-Fil-A with the MSA is back!

Chick- Fil -A Friday is back! Two weeks in and the newly rebranded MSA is at it again, trying to help FSA Athletics with some student focused fundraising. The team formerly know as the Mustang Soccer Association has invented itself to the Mustang Sports Association. This way all the funds raised will go to the sports program as a whole. Last year the group raised $1000 from their fundraising efforts from the sale of Chick - Fil - A breakfast biscuits on Fridays. This academic year while not only will chicken biscuits be on sale, but they will also have a veggie option of tater tots, a healthy option of Greek yogurt Parfaits, and the combo meal that includes a drink. For the Parfaits and tater tots those are limited items so please be sure to let MS. Agha know if you would like one by Wednesday and she will let the team know when placing their order. MSA is also looking for new recruits as they would like to offer a delivery system to teachers who are in class already and can't make it to the cafeteria to make a purchase. High Schoolers check your inboxes for an application form. They are excited about raiding funds for FSA Sports and would like you to get on board as well! Be on the lookout for random prize drawing with CFA products as well.

Home Visits; A Great Activity for Your Student, No Matter Their Grade Level!

Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.

Here is some feedback from our parents:

  • “Early in the school year, a group of teachers took the time to come to our home to meet us and discuss the school program with us. That event brought us back to the time in which schooling was a true partnership between parent and teacher and reaffirmed in our minds that FSA truly cares about the development of our children”
  • “We even had two teachers visit us at our home. They were a pleasure to meet and we could clearly see how much they enjoy teaching students.”
  • “Thank you very much for your visit and the chocolates yesterday. We enjoyed having you over very much. I also want to thank you for turning math from the most complicated and somewhat scary subject into one of our most favorites.”
  • “We all enjoyed your visit last night to our home. It was such a pleasure to informally get to know both of you. My son thought it was really cool that two teachers came to his house. He talked about it the whole way to school this morning in carpool. Personally, I admire the dedication you both have for your jobs. It makes a big difference in a student’s attitude toward school. Your visit left no doubt in my mind that FSA was the right decision for my son.”
  • “I just wanted to write on behalf of my husband and I and thank you for visiting our child. He loved having you both come and visit. We appreciate the level of caring and attention that you have consistently shown our family. It is rare to see such a dedication from teachers for their jobs. We can tell that you love teaching and you care for our children. Thank you for visiting our child when he was not feeling well.”

How can I schedule a home visit?

Very simple.

To schedule a middle or high school school home visit: Simply email sduman@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Mr. Duman will be in touch to confirm final details.

Depending on our teacher’s availability, at least two teachers will be together to visit our students and parents at their homes. The best times to schedule a home visit are weekdays after 5:00 pm, and anytime during the weekends, except Sunday mornings. For any questions you have about this program, send an e-mail to homevisit@fultonscienceacademy.org
